Texarribean Chick Posted May 18, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 18, 2011 in Key West. "Supposedly" it was the tallest building with a restaurant/bar atop, the lower floors seemed to be office like. I was there back in 2002 and had drinks and watched the beautiful sunset. Is it still there and if so, what is the building called and what is the name of the restaurant? Any help appreciated. Thanks.
FKGirl Posted May 18, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 18, 2011 You may be referring to the La Concha, which is a hotel on Duval street. They have a 360 degree view of Key West and there is a bar up top that is open to the public I believe after 3PM. They usually have live music, too. Hope this helps... http://FloridaKeysGirl.com
Aquahound Posted May 18, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2011 Agreed. It sounds like the La Concha Hotel. Op - It's at 430 Duval St. at the corner of Fleming St.
Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted May 19, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2011 The rooms below the rooftop bar are hotel rooms, not offices. One way you can tell from the street is that there is a Starbucks on the bottom floor on Duval Street. That rooftop bar is a great place to see the sunset. It was a fabulous place to watch the full moon one night. What an incredible sight!
aurelius180 Posted May 19, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2011 A store owner told us about that spot a couple years back and it has wonderful views. Go into Starbucks and take the elevator in the back up to the top. There is a small bar up there.
Texarribean Chick Posted May 19, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted May 19, 2011 Thanks so much to all for the replies. As mentioned, I was there many years ago with my Mom. We had traveled together on a cruise and were told to go and have a drink and watch the sunset from this location. We sat there with the beauty surrounding us and wished our husbands were with us (LOL). I have since lost my Mom, very suddenly and at a very young age (58) this is an incredible memory for me. I would love to recommend this to someone else here on CC. Thanks again!

You are correct in that many years ago there were offices at ground level (and no Starbucks) and it looked like anything but a hotel along most of the sidewalk. Compass Rose Posted May 29, 2011 #8 Share Posted May 29, 2011 It was part of the Crowne Plaza, as I remember it.
Aquahound Posted May 29, 2011 #9 Share Posted May 29, 2011 It was part of the Crowne Plaza, as I remember it. That is correct. The Crowne Plaza is the La Concha.
peter_krynicki Posted May 31, 2011 #10 Share Posted May 31, 2011 Whenever "the Mob," friends of Hemingway, came to Key West for a visit, he would put them up at the La Concha for $1.00 / night. They would all go up to the rooftop bar and dance to the Cuban band that played there. Pjk
