Upsell Fairy Alive & Well

So here is another upsell question. If you book through an outside TA will the fairy call you directly or through your TA?

I believe I have read on these boards that upsell fairy will call the TA. If you book thru NCL then they call you directly.

That is correct. If you booked thru a TA, NCL will only deal with your TA (not you directly). Be sure to let your TA know you would be interested in an upsell should they get a call. I don't think the huge online TAs are as likely to pass along an upsell offer to you, but any good private one will.

I just let my TA know that I was very interested in an upsell.... she told me that she would be on the look out and if one came by she would call me.... that would be so exciting.... I wish anyone luck with the upsell fairy, what a magical thing to happen...

Several years ago when I first started cruising with NCL, I was cruising alone and I booked an Inside cabin. My TA recieved a call from NCL and offered my an Oceanview cabin at no additional charges. Since I had already paid the 50% more price for the second passenger rate for cruising solo .... I jumped on the deal.

I was glad to know that the Upsell Fairy doesn't just care about the suite passenger ..... but all the passenger. Sad part is ....... that she hasn't called since.

At least she called once!! I've never gotten the call! But, of course, always hope I will!

Well I got the upsell call for our cruise in March a couple of days before the cruise of which I missed the orginal call and played phone tag for 2 days before i spoke to the rep. She said well the offer I had for you is gone but I do have the Owners Suite a AA. I thought yea right but I got it for only 600 more than my orginal Balcony room. It was the trip of a lifetime and my daughter still talks about it. It was only my second cruise on NCL and I booked direct with NCL. So who knows how they select people.

We have taken almost 30 NCL Cruises and usually do two or three each year. We never got an NCL upsell call until just about three years ago and I can add we have never have received a call unless we were already in booked in some level of Suite already. We have always just assumed that Balcony and below just didn't get calls or that those who called NCL directly snapped up any possible upsells before NCL ever could pull out its majic list. About three years ago when we got our first upsell call we asked how they determined who to call and we were told that they looked at the level of room booked (higher is better), how long you have had the Cruise booked, and your Latitudes Level. I assumed that this system was used in addition to the people who just called, and called, and called NCL. I assume this given the number of posts on this site that talked about the success of calling NCL over and over again. As a Platinum Member I also hope NCL does follow through and doesn't take calls any longber and works its own lists.

When we got the upsell call to Owners Suite on Sky it was only our third NCL cruise. We were booked in an aft balcony (prime location I think for upsell calls) However, the friends we were cruising with who had never been on NCL and were booked in a mid ship balcony also got the call. Although in our case it was an email and the instructions in the email said email response would be better than calling. So make sure NCL has your email and you check it every few hours the week or 10 days before you cruise.

Oldsweets, I have been thinking. On one hand the latitudes level/time of booking/category makes sense because I am platinum platinum plus some yet on the other I remember reading a while ago other cruise critics stating why try hard with the platinums...they already know they have our business. Do not rule out the Casino players where cabins and suites get comped...of course in the hopes they get their money back and more through their onboard spending/gaming. In addition, look at the newbies who got a call and therefore become repeat passengers based on that upsell/upgrade. Therefore, in the spirit of business, I prefer they use whatever method makes the most business sense to them even if it is varied.

However, on the third hand, er foot in mouth I suppose, the competition is doing the same thing. I just sailed a cruiseline I had never sailed before during President's week and booked a second with them to Bermuda this summer because of a considerable price difference during both times of booking (who would have thought)? Tonight I received an upsell offer by the other cruise line and it made me think wow, how very cool! What a nice surprise only being my second cruise with them! So as a newbie to the competitor's line it might make better business for them to capture me for continued future bookings.

I find it all fascinating and for me personally I like not knowing...because there will be times when higher level latitudes are booked ahead in a suite and will not get a call due to nothing being available or it was upsold to someone else for a different business reason. If there is only one way that NCL uses, then we will end up thinking what a bummer...we did not get a call! If there are varied ways or the ways remain an unsolved mystery, then we do not get disappointed.

We got a call for an upsell for our May 29th sailing on the Pearl to Alaska. The call came on Thursday, we sailed on Sunday. The caller id said Norwegian Cruise Line. We were booked in a BB balcony on deck 10. We got an aft penthouse on deck 10. I told her that we were sailing with another couple that would be interested in an upsell also. She looked them up and saw that they were in a mini suite and she said that she could only offer this to balcony cabins.

We also got an upsell in 2006 from a balcony to a mini suite.

Good Post and I can't find anything wrong with your logic although like you I am now booking some of my cruises with other cruise lines and not as many with NCL(we booked three with others this year). What was four NCL Cruises each year are dropping back to one or two while other companies are now getting more of my business.

We have asked ourselves what the cause of this change in our attitude is toward NCL and we think that some is that given the number of cruises we go on per year we enjoy the Suites. But the pricing has gotten a bit over the top in OUR opinion for Suites and now we are looking for something like a suite level with a more competive pricing. We are checking out the quality of rooms/service on some smaller ships that have a bit of upscale and looking to see if we can get something like the Suite life without the NCL Suite prices. I guess we also came the the conclussion the Platinum perks just aren't worth what they used to be and since we don't gewt any benifit as a Platinum in regards to bettering our chances in the Upsell Fairy pool made us itchy to try something else. We are in a Blalcony on the Gem this June so we do still cruise NCL and like the ships but we have many shopping options and loyality breeds loyality.

You are correct that platinum latitudes isn't really worth much. More of a status symbol than anything else. However, you are going to be hard pressed to find another line that offers similar suite perks for a better price. Most don't even offer suite perks as good for any price. Good luck in your search.

Funny when I started reading this post I realized my phone has been getting calls from Florida and just the other night we got the call again. My DH said know anyone in florida and I said nope and we did not answer. Tonight I will go home and check the id after work to see what the number was and do a reverse lookup. I said to DH about a week ago I wonder if we will get and upgrade we never have and we are Gold Members. So glad I read this post..

I don't think it matters if you are a Latitudes member in terms of the upsell. We were booked on back to back Mediterranean cruises in Feb-March 2010, in a mini-suite for 21 days of cruising. They called and offered us an Owner's Suite for just $800 more total for the two of us. It was a wonderful suite. We'd never sailed NCL before and were not Latitudes members. Nor had we booked a suite suite, just the mini.

  • 1 month later...

Hi, I have been reading through all the posts as i have booked a mini suite for next year on the Pearl to Alaka and as this is our first cruise & it is to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary I am considering upgrading/upsell nearer the time to make it really special.

I have recently recieved 3 calls on my phone from an international number, i live in the UK. I was wondering if babyof8 could tell me what the Florida number was that they recieved their calls from as I have not answered the call due to it being from America and not knowing anyone there who would call me.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

For a cruise next year, this would be very early for an upsell, usually 7-10 days before cruise. If it were an upsell/upgrade call, NCL would leave a message. Did they leave any message?

Chances are it would not come from NCL main Florida number either.
