I swore I was not posting here, but I must:o I smoke. I smoke only ever where I am allowed to smoke. I accept that some people really DO have health issues with smoke exposure, but I also know that most do not, or it's an irritant at worst, like I have with perfume and cologne, dislike it intensely when I detect it from 20 ft away... it's just a phenomenon of the times, just like when it used to be cool, safe, and sexy to smoke, when most of my family got addicted. I grew up around it since I was born, and thank God for whatever reason, it did not hurt me, and I am healthier than many younger friends, grace of God, I know. I am skeptical that SHORT TERM exposure to smoke is gonna give anyone a fatal exposure. Nons get more poison driving in a carbon monoxide emitting vehicle every day, trust me it's my business...

Smokers and non-smokers come in all varieties just like humans, some are reasonable (most) and some are off-the-wall. The off ones on both sides will never be content, like other areas of their lives no doubt.

I just wanna cruise and be happy, life's too short:D

On which cruise lines can you still smoke in your cabin? On Carnival they will still allow balcony smoking whereas a lot don't allow that.

 

I'm just curious since I don't smoke (anymore) or cruise on any other cruise line.

I do think that the ban on in cabin smoking was a bit much. As a non-smoker who always sails in inside cabins I've never had a leftover odor that I noticed.

 

I guess if I was still smoking it wouldn't seem like such a big deal to leave my inside cabin on deck 6 and go down to the casino bar to smoke or going up to the Lido doesn't seem like such a big deal to me either.

 

Here in Dallas, there hasn't been smoking in restaurants for a long time and I don't go to bars that don't serve food, so I'm not sure what the rules are.

 

Question for OP though. Are you going to continue to cruise and if so what cruise line will be your choice?

at least until they follow what has now become the industry standard....

 

(I would have suggested Hal or Costa....but CARNIVAL owns them as well...and since their "conviction" says no Carnival....oh well....)

All I can say is 'wow', I guess the OP isn't living in the real world of 2011, he sure couldn't live here in CA where virtually every indoor place is non-smoking and some outdoor too, some parks, outside public buildings, etc. We have many many friends (have large parties of 100 people) and not one of them is a smoker and plenty of us are gamblers and drinkers. I wish Carnival would go a step farther, no balcony smoking either, like Princess' change today.

Are you serious ? This is NOT about someone getting a whiff of smoke .

This is not the non- smokers against the smokers.

This is about the fact that smoking poses a serious health risk for passengers with asthma, COPD, allergies etc.

 

All the smokers have to understand is what would you think if your child had an illness affected by smoke ?

You would never smoke anywhere near your precious child, all we are asking is the same right and choice..

 

Perfume has the same effect on asthma, etc. Strong scent sends me into a coughing fit worse than smoke does. Maybe they will have special sections for the people that believe you should smell them before you see them.

I'm glad smoking is no longer allowed in cabins on a safety issue and public health issue. Fire is a major danger on cruise ships and second hand smoke also causes cancer, ask your MD. it's a medical fact. On one cruise my asthmatic son had breathing problems the entire cruise because of the smoke in our cabin from the chain smokers next door. It comes through the ventilation system. Smokers still have the right to smoke in other areas.

Non-smokers are very lucky as they will one day be dieing of nothing. I think if ccl is on the track of health like everyone keeps stressing, they should go to sugarfree, no fat meals, no alcohol, quite allowing soft drinks on board altogether. I mean let's rid the cruise experience of anything unhealthy.

 

As a non-smoker, I'm hopeful that I won't be "dying" of anything other than old age (my Great Grandmother was 105 when she passed...hopefully it's in the gene's !).

These are choices for everyone...you don't have to; eat the desserts (enjoy fruit), have foods that have high fat content (spa selections), and you don't have to drink alcohol. You also have the choice of diet soda's as well.

 

Unfortunately, when it comes to second hand smoke, there is no choice. If I wanted to go into the piano bar to enjoy the music, I had to inhale the smoke, and my clothes smelled horrid afterward - so I avoided the piano bar and missed out on some great music.

 

With specific designated areas outside for smokers to indulge in a 'habit', I can avoid these areas and have a fantastic cruise experience at other venues and areas of the ship.

In some states you cannot smoke in any public building, restaurants and even in bars. I live in one. Friends who own restaurants have told us that they are glad for the state smoking ban because of less damage, damage occurred often to chairs, tablecloths, floors and tables from cigarette ashe burns. CCL may also have realized that they'll be less potential damage to cabins if smoking is banned plus it's a fire hazard. If someone wants to give themselves lung cancer go for it, just don't expose the rest of us to 2nd hand smoke. I wish the OP well and hope they find a vacation that fits their needs.

It would drastically stop the drunks from accidentally falling overboard. There are far more accidental drunk overboard incidents documented than actual second hand smoke killings. So do you think the cruise industry really cares about your health or profits. And the oh reason they are acting out on such a policy change is because they supposedly took a poll somewhere and these few polled wanted no smoking in cabins. it all depends where and how the poll was taken. Heck if you poll nothing but hippies they would state they wish they had bongs in every room. I nor have I heard that anyone here was polled, so where was this so called poll taken, never never land?

Wow, please read your own words, you can make a choice for healthy selections, same goes for the choice to sit in an area, such ad the piano bar in smoke. Why is it you want everyone else to make choices but everything you would like should be exactly like you want it, I am trying to think of the phrase they call people like that, but it escapes me right now........ My wife was polled after our last cruise in April. She was very clear in her evaluation that the major complaint was the smoke - especially the smoke in the Piano bar. She listed it as the number one complaint about the cruise.

I was not polled. Anyone with a knowledge of statstics will know that a relatively small fraction of a large population is all that is needed to have a statistically valid sample.

 

And by the way, a drunk falling overboard kills himself. A waitress inhaling second hand smoke for 5 hours a night is harmed by the smoker. That is a huge difference

I'm with you! I'm waiting on CCL to "learn a lesson" and be forced to drop rates on the Ecstasy before she leaves Galveston ;)

I am totally thrilled! On our first two cruises, we had few "smoke" issues. On our third cruise, we had a few problems with smoke seeping into our room, but on our last cruise, we had to put towels around our door frame nightly to keep the smoke from literally pouring in. It was an older ship, but still.....it was bad.

 

When we were questioned about our cruise, we stated that we would probably choose a different line on our next cruise due to the smoking policy on CCL. I am glad that we will be able to cruise on CCL because we love the value. I do pay attention to the cost because when we cruise, we take our entire family--2 sons plus their wives, 2 other sons and their friends. We pay for 5 rooms plus our friends who cruise with us take their kids/spouses and they pay for 3 rooms.

 

It would have been a big chuck of change to cruise on a more smoke restrictive line, but we were going to do it. Glad we can book a CCL ship.

The airlines are still flying full and I can remember when they banned smoking on planes and many airports. I also hope Carnival eventually bans all smoking on cruises!!!
