Belize shore excursions

Any recommendations for a celebrity cruise shore excursion in Belize with mild to moderate activity?

We found the tour(can't remember title) that took a small boat ride through the mangroves where we saw wildlfe, and went to a distillery and museum was fun and mild activity. We went outside of the port area, so we could see a bit of the country, rather than staying at the port. There are few taxis, and only a bar and small store within port area. If you walk outside gates there is one market place with local wares, but not necessarily a good area to walk very far in.

Don't know if X offers it, but we took the 'New River & Lamanai' tour on RC and loved it! There is a bit of walking at the ruins site, so a person with mobility issues would have some difficulty -- but I'd call it a 'moderate' activity level. :cool:

 

But Sparty1 is right. This is definitely a port where you either want to have a pre-booked excursion, or just stay on the ship -- and avoid a very long tender ride. It's NOT a place that you want to be wandering around on your own! :eek:

Sparty, are you referring to the air boat tour? We took that one and loved it :)

Actually, no, it was a riverboat(low to water) that held about 15 people. It went slow enough and stopped frequently to see and identify the wildlife. The airboat we have done b4 and is a lot of fun, too.

It depends. We've been to Belize several times and always go on the ruins tours. There are several, and since we are in to touring ruins sites, we like them a lot. The drive can be long but definitely worth it. We enjoyed Cahal Pech expecially, if I remember the name correctly.

If you have never been to Belize definitely go see a ruins if you take the xunantunich tour you will also see alot of the country because it is almost to Guatemala

We went to Xunantunich booked through the ship (Carnival). It was really interesting, a lot to see and we got a lot of information during the trip. We were lucky having booked via Carnival because we returned one hour late and the ship waited for us - 50 people on the tour.

We did the New River and Lamanai, too, and absolutely loved it. To this day it remains one of our favorite shore excursions ever taken. We spent close to an hour on the river, with a wildlife spotter on our boat, who pointed out birds and animals, then we had "local-style" lunch at Lamanai and toured the site for a couple of hours. Lamanai is a Mayan site with Olmec influences, and it is really fascinating. Touring the site involved a fair amount of walking over rough surfaces, but it wasn't particularly strenuous. You have to ride on a bus for a while to get there (and back) from the port, but we considered it absolutely worth it.

 

And let me second, er third, the recommendation to take a tour in Belize. Of the people we know who've cruised to Belize, those that took interesting shore excursions thought it was one of the best ports they've been to, and those that tried to wing it on their own hated it, and thought those of us who loved it were nuts. :rolleyes:

I have been to Belize 5 times on digs. Been to Lamanai four times.It is a wonderfully preserved archaeological site, with a brand new museum, gift shop and lodge. Buy a drink at the bar and you can use the facilities. The trip up the river is the way the ancients would go. The flora and fauna are awesome to behold. You can just walk the main plazas or actually climb a 30 meter central staircase to the breathtaking top platform and look down just as the Mayan ruler would do. This is a large ceremonial and elite residential site not to be missed.

ps: lamanai is mayan for crocodile

I understand going out on your own is not recommened for this port and booking an excurstion is suggested. How about private tours? Looking at Coral Breezes (I think that's the name). This company seems to do what I'd like to do. Yay or Nay????? Thanks

Third or fourth vote for Xunantunich. We were there in 2009 on Inauguration Day.
