I have just finished up all of our preparations for our trip as we are heading out tomorrow. I made an emergency contact sheet for my daughter with numbers for hotels, etc.. What do I put for the ship??

If you go to your cruise line's website and type "emergency contact" in the search function, they will furnish you with telephone numbers and/or email addresses you and your family can use.

I would also suggest you make sure she has your cell phone numbers. When my parents were on their last cruise, we had to contact them for a family emergency and we could not get through on the Dial-A-Ship Contact number listed on the website. I tried many times over several days, both when they were scheduled to be in port and at sea, and I could never get through - I could only get a busy signal. Finally I had to call ship services and the nice people there managed to get a message to the ship which was left with my parents in their stateroom.

As a family we decided to institute a policy to check our email and cell phones for messages at least once a day, even if we have to use the cellular-at-sea service. I would suggest you have an emergency plan in place like that, just in case your daughter experiences the issues I had trying to get through on the Dial-A-Ship service.

Communication At Sea

Telephone: Direct ship-to-shore telephones are provided to each guest stateroom. You may easily place a call to friends, relatives or business associates during your cruise, reception permitting. Similarly, friends and family in the US and Canada may contact Holland America Line ships by direct dialing the following number:

1-866-HAL-SHIP (1-866-425-7447)

From outside the US: 1-732-335-3278

A credit card is required for all inbound phone calls to a ship. The rate is US$16.00 per minute and billing begins at the time specified. Please have the ship name (ms Prinsendam, for example), your party's anme and stateroom number.

Callers at home may also contact each ship directly by dialing the International Access Number (011 from the US), Ocean Code (870) and Ship Number.

Ocean Code: 870

Ship Numbers:

ms Amsterdam: 324-437-011

ms Eurodam: 764-857-176

ms Maasdam: 764-611-948

ms Noordam: 324-602-821

ms Oosterdam: 324-541-710

ms Prinsendam: 324-412-610

ms Rotterdam: 764-663-213

ms Ryndam: 764-092-063

ms Statendam: 764-343-692

ms Veendam: 764-567-077

ms Volendam: 324-596-816

ms Westerdam: 324-412-810

ms Zaandam: 324-644-212

ms Zuiderdam: 324-530-410

ms Nieuw Amsterdam: 765-054-280

For example: Someone calling from the US to the ms Amsterdam would dial 011-870-324-437-011.

$16 a minute is fine for dire emergencies, but I second ellieanne's advice: bring a cell phone and check messages daily. After all, how likely is it that you'd be in your stateroom at the exact time your daughter calls with an emergency? Unless it's the middle of the night, she'll likely be leaving a message anyway. Outgoing calls (when you call her back) are charged at over $6/minute IIRC. Most cell phone services charge only $2.49 a minute.

Relying on your cell phone for family communication sounds like a good idea, but it's been our experience that cell phone service is not that reliable even when in port. Also, international roaming charges can be costly. If you have no service, you cannot access your voice mail to know you need to call home regarding an emergency. Happy Sailing!

I checked the docs my TA sent and the e-docs downloaded from HA, none of this info was provided. So thanks for the help. We will try the cell phone idea; but have the other numbers available just in case.

I check my email at least once a day. To me that is so much more reliable than a phone and so much cheaper. Lots of info can be shared. But I am not a phone person. I know others have them permanently attached to their body.:)

Unfortunately I am that way with my ipad and that is larger than a cell phone:D

Doesn't all this contact info come in the cruise documents package that you can give copies to those who want this information? (Or, was that another line?)

I just set up an emergency contact list for my upcoming cruise. The phone contact numbers are not in the edocs. I went to the website to get the info on on-ship cell services and the number to call the room direct for $16/min. I had to search the website a little to find the them. The direct call number was hidden pretty good.

The number the cruise lines use to call the ship is useless. My FIL tried to reach us on a DCL crews and was unsuccessful everytime he tried. He finally decided to text us and that went through with no problems whatsoever. In addition, text messaging is very reasonable in price compared to phone calls.
