acadran Posted August 9, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Never purchased a guarantee room but trying to go budget this trip and might try guarantee OV. When does the cruise line let you know your cabin number? When you get to port? Before? Thanks.
paul929207 Posted August 9, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2011 It can be any time including when you arrive at the port.

Sometimes months before, sometimes weeks:confused: No set rule. You can also be upgraded prior to sailing and even at check in. All very mysterious, but adds to the fun and anticipation:D Julie

Hi, once , when we booked guarantee, the cabin was assigned in about week's time ........ and once we did not know untill check in. It is probably to the advantage of the cruise line - they can overbook and then when the cancellation show up in the last few days ..... they have more choices. firefly333 Posted August 9, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Iv never not known what my assigned cabin was when I booked gtys before I got to the port. Even last minute bookings, 4 days out, I had the assignement within 24 hours, and knew the cabin #.
acadran Posted August 9, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Thanks! What was the best "upgrade" you've ever gotten after booking "guarantee". Just curious.
cb at sea Posted August 9, 2011 #7 Share Posted August 9, 2011 I've never booked a gty, but friends did....they were initially assigned exactly what they paid for....an inside cabin....but, when they arrived to the ship, they found they'd been reassigned a deck 9 balcony...a significant upgrade! They were extremely happy! This is NOT what usually happens tho! So...keep your fingers crossed, but don't hold your breath!
CraftyEC Posted August 9, 2011 #8 Share Posted August 9, 2011 We booked through an on-line TA / specialist company and have been told we will get information re suite etc two weeks prior to departure. They were able to tell us some details, but not all, about hotels on either end of the trip, but I suppose they haven't yet had confirmation of suite details. I'd not heard this form of booking called 'GTY' or 'guarantee' here, but I suppose that's what it is. Not holding out for an upgrade though, we'll be very happy with the grade we've asked for. STARFISH*4 Posted August 10, 2011 #9 Share Posted August 10, 2011 first and only gty cabin was assigned right away-worst deck for us and worst cabin--was not gonna do for a 2 week Panama Canal cruise, so right away i paid a few dollars more and went up 6 decks and eventually that led to an OV after initially having an inside. personally will NEVER book a gty again...its worth the few dollars more which seems to be the case everytime i am ready to book, better to book the cabin you want, so you know. Dayenu Posted August 10, 2011 #11 Share Posted August 10, 2011 My father paid for the cheapest inside, and got inside on one of the upper levels. He didn't do it again after getting motion sick. :o
CraftyEC Posted August 10, 2011 #12 Share Posted August 10, 2011 We're booked for a Veranda Suite (room really!) and there aren't any inside rooms (Seabourn) so I still think we'll be happy with the room :) If not, we'll just have to spend more time out and about around the ship! Wayfairers Posted August 10, 2011 #13 Share Posted August 10, 2011 I always book gty inside and truly cannot remember when I get my room #. I haven't gotten it for my next cruise yet (in Oct). The only upgrade I've gotten is to a room with a porthole (turned out to be a good sized window). The cabin is really not that important to me since I don't spend much time there. mamasue Posted August 10, 2011 #14 Share Posted August 10, 2011 Thanks! What was the best "upgrade" you've ever gotten after booking "guarantee". Just curious. The best GTY upgrade we got was last November. We booked an inside GTY on MSC, for a 10-day B2B. We actually got assigned a superior balcony. The cruise was just a last-minute cheapie..... We loved the cruise line, loved the balcony, loved the whole thing.... I'm sure it was a once-in-a-lifetime upgrade!! Another time we booked a balcony GTY on a transatlantic cruise on NCL....ended up with an awesome aft wrap!!! We've booked a lot of GTY cabins.... had a lot of good ones, some great oned.... never had a bad cabin!!
