Oceans&Rivers Posted August 16, 2011 #27 Share Posted August 16, 2011 Come on folks, this is ENGLISH we're talking about. People pronounce their names the way they want -- not the way it's spelled. I always try to pronounce a name the way the "owner" of that name does. His/her pronunciation makes it "correct". (I mean look at "Worcestershire" and thousands like it!) Exactly! :D Here's a long list of English names with counterintuitive pronunciations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_in_English_with_counterintuitive_pronunciations My favorite is Cholmondeley which sounds like chum-lee

JimandStan Posted August 18, 2011 #29 Share Posted August 18, 2011 sorry guys.... but it is o she ann ae ......... i.......... e......... i........ o I maintain that if this is true, then somebody has to contact Olivia DeHavilland to tell her that she has been pronouncing her first name incorrectly for 95 years! I posted this yesterday, along with my concerns about locating Miss DeHavilland if she had (gasp!) moved to one of those "who knows how to say it" countries such as India, Austria, Ethiopia or Somalia, but somehow the original has disappeared into the ether.... http://www.howjsay.com/ I rest my case.
