Hawaiian Cruise question

We are trying to figure out what line we are going to take for our 25th Anv. cruise. Celebrity is in the running, on one of the Itineraries it has this listed on one on the days in the Island , can someone explane to me what this means : Mount Kilauea - Evening Sail Cruising 11:59 PM

Probably the night time sail by the volcano to see the lava flow at night.

You can actually see the lava flowing down the mountain from the ship.The ship sat in one spot off shore for a couple of hours fpr all to see

BTW -- you might want to look closely at your ship's itinerary, and figure out which side of the ship would give you the best view, before you book (if you are booking an OV or balcony cabin). :cool:

Thanks for the info and the tip ! We were going with Princess, but I think this may have changed our minds.

It's fabulous, don't miss it. When we did it, starboard was the best side for viewing from your room, but it was fun out on deck with everyone.

We are sailing with Celebrity in April. I looked at Carnival and Princess.

Here's what helped me decide:

 

I went onto the roll call for the Carnival, Celebrity and Princess cruises I was interested in.

 

1. The Carnival folks seemed like they all knew each other from previous cruises and had booked as a group. A lot of the chatter was about drinking and partying. (not my style) By the time I found an unobstructed balcony, the price was no longer such a bargain. Carnival wanted $5 for a jug of distilled water for a Bi-pap machine. This is a medical necessity. RCI and Celebrity don't charge. Why should someone have to pay for a health necessity?

 

2. From looking at the deck plans, Princess's ship was just a nightmare to navigate. I've never seen such a poorly laid out vessel. There was very little chatter on the Princess roll call.

 

3. I was going to sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise so we used the opportunity to book the Hawaii cruise on board, resulting in $300 OBC and $100 pp deposits. We also got Elite membership from X's Captains Club by being Diamond on Royal and were able to get an 'A' category veranda for the price of a 'B'. We will save some money on "refreshments" on the Celebrity cruise due to the loyalty club status, too.

 

4. The only place in Hawaii we had been was Kauai, so we were not going to miss it on the itinerary.

The pass by the lava flow was really a neat sight. But it didn't last all that along. Also, we almost missed it as we passed during our late dining seating and it was not announced. Fortunately we were seated by the dining room window on the correct side of the ship for viewing.

Celebrity started listing the volcano sail by like a port day. They only do four ports in 15 days.

 

The other lines (and Celbrity use to) do five port days on a 15 - just an fyi.

Someone on our roll call October 2012 just let us know that the itinerary just went from four ports to three ------ are they kidding:confused:

We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary with that same trip on the Holland America Oosterdam sailing October 22. Congratulations on your 25th. We looked at all the ships going and itineraries. We were booked for a long time on both the Century and the Oosterdam. Had a hard time making up our minds. Did not consider the Princess because of negative comments about the beds and smoking policies. HAL has similar smoking policies. Hope that doesn't ruin our trip. Our final decision was made based on the room we had on the HAL. It is an aft room and we wanted to try it. Also HAL was going to Kuaii and I wanted to see that island. Would have liked to see the lava flo at night, tho. The difference in the ships was that the Oosterdam is quite a bit newer and is in dry dock right now being refurbished. It had better ratings on cruise critic. It was cheaper. I did notice that the Princess had some really good prices, maybe the best. Didn't do much more research on the Princess. The crew on the Oosterdam got rave reviews. It was a hard decision and I had to give up a really nice obc package and one day of sailing and the lava flo, but the room and Kuaii were more important to me.

I, too, was worried about the smoking policies on the other lines. That's one reason I stayed with Celebrity. I am so looking forward to going to the casino and dropping my quarters into the video poker machine one at a time. I never get to the casinos on other ships because of the smoke. Even though RCI ships have no smoking on formal nights, I'm usually doing something else. With all the sea days, I'm looking forward to a little gambling.

My understanding is there hasn't been any significant lava flow into the ocean in several months...not sure I'd be planning a cruise around seeing this.
