Healy-Denali transportation

I am looking into lodging for Denalli for 2to3 days and looking into staying in Healy. If I take the train to Denali Is there transportation available or am I better off staying in Denalli area.I could rent a car to drive the route from Anchorage . would I miss a lot by not riding the train . I also will be staying in Talkeetna any suggestions . Thanks

The area is far more accessable with a rental car. There is little difference between the train and Parks Highway, Anchorage/Fairbanks. But it definately takes longer and is point to point.

 

I like the budget Denali Park Hotel, this year, they did offer a shuttle service for the train and park. But, overall, Healy will have few lodging options with transportation.

The train tracks run parallel to the road. See map. I think you would miss a lot more by taking the train since you would lose the ability to stop at other places of interest along the way or stop for wildlife sightings.

I too recommend driving, unless you don't like long distance driving.

 

The flexibility a car affords you are priceless, not the mention the many more attractions that will be open for you to visit on the way to Denali.

A car of your own is a huge benefit. You can choose meals and activities including where to sleep.

Agree with the recommendations to rent a car. If you decide to stay in Healy, there is a very nice B&B called the Denali Dome Home http://www.denalidomehome.com/index.htm They are an AAA 3-diamond rated facility with comfortable & spacious rooms, excellent breakfasts and gracious, helpful hosts.
