"Carry on" size?

I'd say once you're on board, odds are more in your favor since flight attendants are trying to get everyone set and the plane out of the gate.

Especially since the flight attendants don't start getting paid until the door closes.

This may have been mentioned already but if there is a chance that you will have to check your carry on bag remember to be careful what you pack in it. Do not pack valuables or breakable items, etc or any item that you do not want out of site. So, think through what you pack in it.

A total stranger yelling at me about anything that's none of their business isn't going to care for my reaction.

True enough, but it certainly didn't help my nerves before my first flight and it didn't change the fact that he had to check his bag. His wife actually apologized to me before we boarded the plane (when he wasn't around).
