Delft or Amsterdam??

We are visiting Rotterdam on QM2 in June 2012. We could do either ships tours or travel by train ourselves to either Delft or Amsterdam.

As Australians, this is likely to be our one and only ever visit to Holland - so which should we visit Delft or Amsterdam. I feel that perhaps it "should" be Amsterdam, but we are not keen on large noisy cities. Also would Delft be large enough for a full day visit?

Any thoughts please??

Without a doubt visit Amsterdam, you can easily do this on your own.

see: http://www.whatsinport.com/Rotterdam.htm

Delft is good for an hour or so, but Amsterdam is worth a full day, if not more.

There are about 4 trains an hour to Amsterdam. The train will get you to the center of Amsterdam within an hour.

Enjoy your trip.

If your only visit there, Amsterdam is a must do.

Make sure to take as much time as possible and you can see a lot with one of the canal tours.

Also walk the "Jordaan" to experience the atmosphere of Amsterdam.

Delft can be worth a visit, it is like a mini Amsterdam. Would be more laid back and is also very easy to do by train. Just get out of the station, walk straight across, then parallel to the large street, are the canals and very old houses, dating from around 1600 and some even older. Would be great to go to the main square when the open air market is on.

(Had one of my first afternoon jobs there when I was about 14, recognised the square instantly when I was there last year as a tourist)
