LML101 Posted November 27, 2011 #1 Share Posted November 27, 2011 I am on Splendor, just pulling out of Lanzarote. We passed right by one of the Aida ships, and there was several minutes of back and forth between the two ships blowing their horns. Cute!

Gingerbint Posted November 27, 2011 #3 Share Posted November 27, 2011 We had this occur when we left Lanzarote in November, between us on the Adventure of the Seas and the Queen Mary 2 - it was good fun!
Rare Lionesss Posted November 27, 2011 #4 Share Posted November 27, 2011 Disney Magic, and RCI in St. Thomas couple years ago. AWESOME.................................. Safe travels.
satxdiver Posted November 27, 2011 #5 Share Posted November 27, 2011 I have had this happen on several cruises when leaving a port. I love it.
alexkrn46 Posted November 27, 2011 #6 Share Posted November 27, 2011 Most memorable Adventure and Queen Mary in St Thomas. But we have seen the RCCL ships greet each other in Mexico.
C Cruise Dude Posted November 27, 2011 #7 Share Posted November 27, 2011 The Carnival Valor and Glory exchanged horn greetings two weeks ago as the ships passed. The CD on the Glory prepared the passengers to shout, "You're on the wrong ship.," as we passed. Pretty cool.
Ocean Boy Posted November 28, 2011 #8 Share Posted November 28, 2011 One year we had a awesome sail-a-way between Adventure and Ocean Village in St. Maarten. The two captains went at it for quite some time with the ships' horns. They made it so memorable!:)
lidodeckbound Posted November 29, 2011 #9 Share Posted November 29, 2011 The Carnival Valor and Glory exchanged horn greetings two weeks ago as the ships passed. The CD on the Glory prepared the passengers to shout, "You're on the wrong ship.," as we passed. Pretty cool. That, my friends; is what it is all about. Not about RCCL, or CCL, or NCL, or whatever. It is about cruisin!!!!! Love it.
Rare orville99 Posted November 30, 2011 #10 Share Posted November 30, 2011 Best one we ever "participated" in was in St. Martin while on Disney's Magic. We were across the pier from Mein Schiff, and when it pulled out it blew one long blast. Magic responded with one long blast. Then Mein Schiff did three short blasts. Magic responded in kind with three short. Then Mein Schiff did one really long blast, and Magic responded with its signature "when you wish upon a star" , and Mein Schiff pulled silently away amid a rousing cheer from the decks of the Magic. Not a good idea to cross horns with the mouse:D
Yellow Lab's Rule Posted November 30, 2011 #11 Share Posted November 30, 2011 When we were in Alaska this summer in the evening we were set to pass the Disney Wonder in the Inside Passage. We were on HAL Voldendam. The captain told everyone if they wanted to see the Disney Wonder to get out on the decks. The Voldendam blew it's horn a few times and the Wonder responded by it's horns playing When you wish upon a star, it was really neat to hear and see. wrp96 Posted November 30, 2011 #12 Share Posted November 30, 2011 We passed HAL's Maasdam entering Sydney Nova Scotia last year and we loved the exchange of horns, especially the final TOOT-TOOT.
MaskedTurtle Posted November 30, 2011 #13 Share Posted November 30, 2011 I'm getting kind of jealous that I have never experienced one of these friendly exchanges. These "duels" sound like they even more fun than when passengers are late to board.
gmadvm Posted November 30, 2011 #14 Share Posted November 30, 2011 We were on Jewel in I think 2006 when she made her first visit to Halifax nova scotia and when we were pulling out, all the ships in the port blew their horns. Not other cruise ships, like tug boats and fishing boats. To get out of the port you sail a fair bit between the cliffs so the sounds were bouncing off the walls. It was really neat. pcur Posted November 30, 2011 #20 Share Posted November 30, 2011 We've witnessed a couple of good ones, too. Also in St. Thomas between two RCCL ships and a Disney ship. Then "finale" was a "shave and a haircut, two bits" routine. Hilarious. We were sailing out of St. Thomas on another cruise, and passed by a Carnival ship. Someone yelled over to us, "We get to stay longer than you", and someone from our ship yelled back, "Yes, but our FOOD is better!". Also, hilarious. klingoncruiser Posted November 30, 2011 #21 Share Posted November 30, 2011 We made the mistake of dueling Disney one time in Cozumel. They came back with the notes from close encounters of the third kind. Just too funny. As others have said, don't duel with Disney.....:D
CarpeCerevisi Posted November 30, 2011 #22 Share Posted November 30, 2011 Last December both the Majesty and Monarch were at Coco Cay at the same time (hey, I guess it's true, all cruise ships do look alike). As they parted company that evening the two sisters said their goodbyes to each other via their horns.

gord13 Posted December 1, 2011 #25 Share Posted December 1, 2011 It's something that captains do. It's a greeting from one vessel to another. Kind of a "Hello and have a safe voyage" kind of thing. I worked as a bar tender on a sight seeing ship and that is what the Captain told me. A mariner tradition.
