Newbie.... sooooo do the decks have different carpet colors so you can tell getting off the elevator what deck you are on???

 

I know in most hospitals they have color coded hallways so you can never get lost. red=ER, green= cafe, blue= patient rooms....and so on, are cruise ships like this also??? thanks.

No - just look at the indicator inside the elevator, or listen to the recorded message. :D

 

It is more difficult to head the correct way on the accommodation floors after you get out of the elevator. The right hand side (when facing forward) is the starboard side and the cabins have odd numbers. Obviously the port side has even-numbered cabins. The lower numbers are at the front of the ship. If you keep this in mind you won't spend ages wandering around looking for your cabin.:):)

Actually, to be more accurate, both sides have blue carpeting but on the port side, there are strips of red in the carpet design. Unless you're aware of them, you may not even notice.

Have a look at a ship/deck plan (online or in a brochure) before you go on the cruise to familiarise yourself with the ship and venues onboard.

We were on the Star in October and were surprised to see that there was no color coding of the carpets. The Star is the only ship that I can recall that did not have the red and blue sides.

When the Star had a fire a few years ago, they did not have both types of carpet available.

 

Supposedly at some future time, the "red" side will be installed again.

The elevator 'talks' to you and tells you what floor you are on; there are lovely signs at every intersection telling you what floor you're on and if you're on port or starboard. I still get lost on occasion.

 

When you board they give you a pocket guide, nicely folded. Most carry it with them until they are familiar with the ship - which means for the entire cruise! The guide and the wall signs, and the carpet, help you get places with ease.

Good visual. For years we just keep in mind that port is like port wine which red and has an even amount of letters whereas starboard has an odd amount of letters. After awhile it becomes automatic.

Caribe Deck aft did not have the colored carpet on a recent cruise on Star Princess after dry dock. When we're on a ship that doesn't have the colored carpet, we look at the artwork in the elevator lobby of the deck of our cabin so that for the cruise we'll know which direction to go to reach our cabin. Usually the artwork is on the wall of the landing of the stairway down to the next deck.
