Europe's biggest tour operator TUI Travel has recorded record profts - just weeks after their rivals Thomas Cook

were on the verge of collapse in the wake of deteriorating sales.

The travel group, which owns Thomson and First Choice, recorded profits of £471m - up 18% - in the 12 months

to September 30. Revenue also jumped 9% to £14.7bn.

TUI chief executive Peter Long said he was "very pleased" with the performance.
