cmitch9999 Posted May 5, 2004 #26 Share Posted May 5, 2004 Cecilla You could say that I don't have personal experience on the Crown so may not be the best to judge the issues of ship maintenance..but I think you are off base saying I don't know what I am talking about. As a Librarian I make a career of giving out information, accurate information-- the sentance about routine maintenance was directly related to recent passengers reporting problems on the Crown. They were the ones saying thing have been neglected and not taken care of. The Norwalk on the Crown is a matter of public record on CDC.. I believe it did come on thru passengers but somehow I can't believe that every week another crop of infected passengers just happens to come aboard to pass on the virus. It makes more sense to think it originates on the ship..with the crew perhaps. I am sure they are trying to do what they can to stop the virus,,maybe this week they were successful. I very much would like to stick with our plans on the Crown. I researched all of the bermuda cruises and this was the best one for our family for several reasons. Hopefully things will be improving ,, the returning passengers from the media hyped "cruise from hell" certainly give a different impression than reported by the press. I will be there cheering for all of the future Crown passengers --- hoping all will have a healthy happy cruise. (maybe a little sunshine, too!) smeyer418 Posted May 5, 2004 #27 Share Posted May 5, 2004 Unfortunately, since this is an airborne illness you can't just change the air. Also once the crew has it they continue to pass it around until it runs(you should pardon the expression) its course. Disney had it and had to pull a ship a while back to clean it off. Its rare that the good scrubbing doesn't begin to lessen the effect from cruise to cruise. The choices are to cancel a cruise for a week or two or try to bring down the incidence. I am sure the CDC is monitoring this and watching the number of cases. The chances of getting it are still small. 1. Wash you hands. 2. Touch the ship as little as possible 3. wash you hands 4. I know this is something you will find strange...don't shake hands! 5. wash you hands. here is the latest CDC report Norwegian Cruise Line has reported an increased number of cases of gastrointestinal (GI) illness on the ship, Norwegian Crown, for the voyage completed on May 2, 2004 (sailing dates: 4/25-5/2/2004) in Philadelphia, PA. On April 29, Norwegian Cruise Line contacted CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) staff to report that an unusual number of Norwegian Crown passengers were experiencing GI illness. At 3:30 a.m. , ET, on May 2, the ship’s medical staff reported that 43 of 1109 (3.88%) passengers and 2 of 536 (0.37%) crew members were ill. here is what the cdc says to do http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/pub/Norovirus.htm [This message was edited by smeyer418 on 05-05-04 at 03:56 PM.]
dlb145 Posted May 5, 2004 #28 Share Posted May 5, 2004 I contacted my TA regarding the Crown's problems. She has called NCL and they are assuring her that the ship is sailing without problems now and that they did have a fuel line break that caused passengers to become ill but everything is now fine... My TA seems to feel that by the time we sail, there should be no problems, but I am still quite afraid that the Crown may not be the ship to put our hard earned vacation money into. Hopefully we will hear from passengers that are now sailing on this ship whether it is actually a good ship...
digitaldan1 Posted May 5, 2004 #29 Share Posted May 5, 2004 db145 I was on the ship at the same time as the virus and fuel leak. I had a great time. The food was super, the crew was friendly, Bermuda was beautiful. Try the floating islands dessert and every souffle they offer in the seven seas restaurant. dsawyer Posted May 5, 2004 #30 Share Posted May 5, 2004 Digitaldan1, your statement just made my day. I think everything is going to be just fine on our Crown voyage to Bermuda in July. Thanks for your input. Ted Posted May 9, 2004 #31 Share Posted May 9, 2004 Just back from Crown today. Frankly, I was extremely dissapointed that NCL permitted it to sometimes rain while we were in port. Clearly, they should have done something about that!!! Otherwise, it was a great trip. More later.

I'm not questioning your intentions or your integrity. I was only trying to say that since neither you or I have been on the Crown recently, we can't say for sure what's happening with maintenance. As we all know, two people can be on the same cruise and have opposite experiences. And the recent sailings of the Crown haven't had levels of passengers sick enough to require reporting to the CDC so I'm lead to believe things are getting better. Granted, the crew may be the people continuing to spread this virus because they can't leave but it's just as easily to say that passengers continue to bring it with them too. We can't say for sure. I really do hope that everything is back to normal for your sailing.
cmitch9999 Posted May 10, 2004 #33 Share Posted May 10, 2004 Cecilla appreciate your words of clarification. Despite the published news articles, the passengers on the recent sailings on the Crown continue to report in to CC about their having had a good cruise experience. Not sure what 'normal' will be for the ship...it's been having a longer than 'normal' spite of problems... Let's hope it can be abnormally GREAT for the future Crown passengers! Cheers and rum swizzles for all aboard Chris Mitchell 16 Voyages completed 1999-2004, 81 wonderful days at sea dreaming of ....
