SMNYCruise Posted April 13, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2005 Are there age restrictions for the gym (machines and weights) on AOS? Kids can join my local gym at age 14. Just wondering if there is any minimum age to use the equipment on the ships?
Nliedel Posted April 13, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2005 There is an age restriction I think it is 16.
PAGA Posted April 13, 2005 #3 Share Posted April 13, 2005 My 14 year old daughter used the gym with me on Navigator. I believe there is an age limit (16) for children to use the gym alone.
cruislovin Posted April 13, 2005 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2005 The age restriction is 16 - with or without parents present.
springtxbill Posted April 13, 2005 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2005 I believe the limit is 16 regardless, but if they are not crowded and they are with you, they will probably not stop them.
bplazo Posted April 13, 2005 #6 Share Posted April 13, 2005 This is the reason alot of people have problems with cruising with children. If there is an age limit respect it. I enjoy going to places that restrict children (like the gym) because I need time away from mine. I have a daughter and whenever we cruised I made sure that she knew the places she was allowed into. Rare Tak8 Posted April 13, 2005 #7 Share Posted April 13, 2005 That is one of the nice things about Princess. They allow children as long as they are with an adult. Having said it, I do believe it's important to follow the policy of the cruiseline you are on.

I agree with you 100%!!! If my daughter wants to exercise with me, we walk or jog outside on the track on deck. If I go in the gym, or the pool in the solarium, my children know that is "my" time! If children, AND parents, would follow the rules there would probably be many less complaints about children and teens on cruises...
Guest OBAYbee Posted April 13, 2005 #9 Share Posted April 13, 2005 Apparently it will depend on who is in charge of the gym on your ship whether or not the rule gets enforced. My nephew was 15 and not allowed in the Mariner gym with or without his dad.
bcurran2003 Posted April 13, 2005 #10 Share Posted April 13, 2005 as in any club there are peak hours and off peak hours. on a smaller ship like the grandeur the gym will always seem busy, on the newer larger ships the gyms are much largerand has periods where there are plenty of empty machines. it would be difficult to bring a teen in on sea days as generally the gyms are busy all day. on port days after nine they are empty then start to fill up again around 3:30. use common sense, take a peek and if there are only a few people in there have at it. under no means should your teen be unsupervised. some of the best conversations i had with my 14 year old son was while we were riding on the bicycles during a grand caymen port day. we were the only persons in there for a good forty five minutes and then one couple came in
caviargal Posted April 13, 2005 #11 Share Posted April 13, 2005 I appreciate RCI's policy on no under 16 being allowed in the gym. It is one of the few places on the ship kids and teens do not have access to and I enjoy the adult environment. I personally would complain to a staff member if the rule was not being adhered to and expect the offender to be removed. I agree with the above poster that said if parents actually enforced the rules for their kids, there were would be a lot fewer complaints.
bplazo Posted April 14, 2005 #12 Share Posted April 14, 2005 There should be no exceptions. If the rule is no children under 16 then there should be no kids under 16 regardless of the crowd.

PAGA Posted April 14, 2005 #14 Share Posted April 14, 2005 I have sent the following question to RCCL customer service via email -- I will let you know the response when I hear back... To RCCL via email 4/14/05, 8:30am: "Is there an age limit for using the ShipShape Fitness Center? I am particularly interested in knowing whether my 14 year old daughter, who is an athlete, can work out in the gym under my supervision." I will say that on the RCCL website the Aerobics in Motion class description says "appropriate for all ages" (though this can of course be interpretted different ways) and unlike the website information for the specialty restaurants and the solarium pool the ShipShape Fitness center web page does not specify an age restriction. PAGA Posted April 14, 2005 #15 Share Posted April 14, 2005 We just returned from BOS 1-14-05 Panama Cruise.Sign on gym and notices in daily reports were that you could use gym facilities if you were 17 or older. If not you had to be accompanied by an adult. Did a search on the message board for other threads re: kids in the fitness center -- the post above is the most recent information I found that referenced actually seeing a rule in writing...
