Tucker in Texas Posted October 4, 2020 #1078 Share Posted October 4, 2020 (edited) I have never seen them specifically identified in the Patters. It always says "smoking only in designated areas." However, I have found there is an area on Deck 14 (I think), near the forward elevators and a bar that has been consistent on all the Princess ships I have been on. It is covered, has tables and chairs, and they even set up coffee/tea in the mornings. On deck 4 there has been a small "nook" outside by the aft elevators near the theater entrance that has been consistent. The problem is that there are no chairs, outside in the elements, closed when in port, and when it is windy. A wall ashtray. You, also, get a lot of face fanning, coughs, and smart remarks because people walking the Promenade have to pass very close to it. . The casino sometimes has an area if you are playing the slots and they are open. The sports bar allows smoking but the joke is you don't need to bring cigarettes because you can just go in there and inhale and get your "fix." (lol). So, if you are at the aft end of the ship, the nearest will be the "nook" otherwise a "hike" to the forward end. Once they had smoking on the deck outside the Horizon which was nice but it was gone the last time I was on the same ship I had been on before. Theoretically, cigar and pipe smoking was only permitted in the sports bar when I was on the ship last year but I saw people smoking pipes and cigars in the area up on Deck 14 and it was enforced about as much as chair hogging/reserving seats in the theater is--like never (lol). skynight Posted October 4, 2020 #1079 Share Posted October 4, 2020 There are usually a few paragraphs in the Princess Patter regarding the smoking policy. I'm looking at the Emerald Princess Patter from 2/26/19. The policy is on the back page along with details on where smoking is permitted on the ship. The Emerald pretty much is in line with what Tucker in Texas reports and is pretty much the same as other Grand Class ships. In summary: -Designated sections of the casino and nightclub. Casino smoking is limited to some specific slots while playing. No smoking elsewhere in the casino at any table games or at the casino bar. Certain evenings in the casino are non-smoking. From experience these have been the formal nights. -Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, deck 6. Smoking cigars or pipes outside of this lounge and on the open decks is not permitted. -Promenade deck starboard aft, deck 7 -Portside forward, deck 16 near the Tradewinds Bar. -Deck 17 aft under Skywalker's -No smoking in cabins or on balconies. -Electronic cigarettes can be used in designated smoking areas and within the confines of the stateroom, excluding the balcony. Since cruise lines can't keep any kind of running info on smoking, each ship publishing the smoking areas is a very nice service. We were on an American Cruise Line ship a couple of years ago (a line to be avoided at all costs) and the Captain was never informed that smoking was allowed on his ship! I've always been amused at the attitude about smokers out there ... "they" seem to think that by ignoring the whole issue, we'll stop smoking. That's not exactly an intelligent way to handle the situation. But I understand how people feel about smokers ... all you have to do is look around the smoking area almost anywhere. Instead of using whatever is provided, people have put cigarette butts on the ground ... they're either jerks or stupid. It's disgusting.

The Coral Princess smoking areas should be similar as far as the Casino, Churchill Lounge which is mid ship on deck 7, Promenade deck starboard aft area, The Bar & Grill area on deck 15, probably portside, maybe an area on deck 16 aft by the shuffleboard area. Restrictions on cabin and balcony smoking apply. Smoking areas and policy should be shown in the Princess Patter on boarding day or the first full day. They always remind me of my Great Gandpep who always smoked cigars! He had a permanent dip in his lower lip from where he held his stogie! We had about five cigar smokers on that cruise and they were always welcome in the aft outdoor smoking area on starboard side of Sun deck!!! I will always fight for your right to smoke outdoors with us!! NO ONE in our substantial smoking family on that cruise objected!! We also had bar service there since there were so many of us! Enjoy yuor cruises!!! I remember having a cigar in Churchills on my last trip on the Caribbean Princess years ago. Out of the blue the Captain comes in to have a smoke & and a bump at the end of the day. He took about15 minutes just to shoot the breeze and unwind with me & the DW. A very cool experience indeed.

skynight Posted February 27, 2021 #1085 Share Posted February 27, 2021 2 hours ago, cruise47 said: What is the official smoking policy for all the Princesses cruise ships? Pre-covid. There are three basic classes of ships, Coral/Island Class, Grand/Crown Class and Royal Class. All have different layouts but in general here is the scoop. All public lounges, bars, dining areas, facilities & other indoor areas are non-smoking except for the few specific designated smoking areas. Cigar & pipe smoking is limited to the cigar lounge and no other indoor or outdoor location on the ship. Cigarette smoking is permitted indoors at certain slot machines while playing. Some evenings are smoke free. No smoking at table games or the casino bar. On some ships there is a nightclub. Cigarette smoking may be permitted in a certain section of the nightclub. The nightclub may be smoke free during daytime hours. Depending on the ship there are certain outdoor areas where cigarette smoking is permitted These are limited in size. Each ship is a little different. All ships have a small smoking area aft on the starboard side of the promenade (Island Princess may be an exception). It's a small standing area where the cigarette disposal container is attached to the wall, not the entire side of the promenade. There is usually a smoking area on the deck above the main Lido pool adjacent to the bar on the port side. Some ships have a smoking area aft on one of the upper open decks. No smoking in any cabin or on any balcony. E-cigarettes are restricted to designated smoking areas, but can also be used within the cabin. E-cigarettes are not permitted on balconies. Smoking is restricted to these small areas. There are no ships for example where smoking is permitted on an entire side of the promenade or an entire side of a pool. Smoking is not permitted around any of the indoor or outdoor pools on any ship. https://www.princess.com/learn/faq_answer/onboard/experience.jsp

skynight Posted May 4, 2021 #1093 Share Posted May 4, 2021 I think Princess has the limited smoking areas correct. A total ban on smoking would result in more individuals finding "secret" locations to grab a smoke. Besides being an issue for non smoking passengers, smoking in uncontrolled areas becomes a fire hazard issue. The only exception might be the casino where smoking could be further restricted. You can not compare a cruise ship to land based activities and accommodations. There is no where to go on a ship while at sea. You can't leave grab a smoke and return. Disclosure. We our a life long non smokers.

A very old small ship. Only about 2000 passengers. Carnival Paradise has not been non smoking for years. That was discontinued many years ago. One non smoking ship doing the same itinerary over and over could not succeed over the long term. Plus enforcement was draconian. Better to have a few outdoor smoking areas so smokers don't smuggle smokes. Celebrity has no indoor smoking, not even the casino, only several outdoor areas, that seems to work. Having anything acceptable by 76% of cruisers when 24% infringe on their health through 2nd hand smoke - not to mention the added cost to cruise lines to sustain the habit which everyone else helps pay for in their fares - is more than adequate motivation to make it happen. Once the first cruise line does it...the others will follow like sheep. The 76% majority of non-smoking passengers will gladly welcome the change. I can’t believe that any cruise line is going to give up 1/4 of their customers
SteveH2508 Posted May 6, 2021 #1096 Share Posted May 6, 2021 Do not forget the crew in all of this. Many (most?) of the crew come from the Asian area or Eastern Eurpope, where smoking is much more prevalent. The cruise lines may well have difficulty crewing a totally non-smoking ship.

Certainly not in the cabin. Depends on the cruise line - some have a crew smoking area, some let the crew smoke in the passenger smoking area. For example - we spent quite a bit of time in the cigar room on Regent Seven Seas Voyager chatting with the HR director and the Head Chef over a smoke and a cognac. On Royal Princess there would often be crew standing in a corner on deck 7 which was a small designated smoking area.
