Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

I was on saphire, and found the outdoor smoking section. Now, saphire ALSO has a "churchill lounge - (the nicest one I've seen).

 

Anyways, I sat down in the smoking area and fired up a cigar (people all around me smoking cigarettes).  A staff member came to me and said I could NOT smoke cigars there.  WHAT??    I'm outside, in the middle of tobacco smoke!

 

I told the staff member to get their manager. I told the manager that if he were to go down to churchill's,  and remove ALL the cigarette smokers then I would be glad to go there. He then said, ok - you can smoke here so long as no one complains. No one ever did.

 

The churchills on my alaskan cruise was small, and always full of people chain-smoking cigarettes.  I totally avoided it, and kept my smoking to outdoors - as did all the cigar smokers I encountered.

 

When we were on the Grand Princess Hawaiian Cruise December 3rd, I told all the Cigar smokers to sit by me (a cigarette smoker) because I LOVE the smell of cigars!  They always remind me of my Great Gandpep who always smoked cigars!  He had a permanent dip in his lower lip from where he held his stogie!  We had about five cigar smokers on that cruise and they were always welcome in the aft outdoor smoking area on starboard side of Sun deck!!!  I will always fight for your right to smoke outdoors with us!!  NO ONE in our substantial smoking family on that cruise objected!!  We also had bar service there since there were so many of us!  Enjoy yuor cruises!!!

Can't recall which ship it was but the "best" and most comfortable Churchill I have experienced had its own bar with 2 bartenders, 2 flat screens, and it was way aft, right off one of their "vista" lounges. Though there were some cig smokers there, the room was huge and large enough so I could sit among cigar smokers and not be bothered by cigarette smoke.  I just can't recall which ship that was, but...since then I've run into those tiny lounges w/o their own bars that are usually adjacent to the casinos. Since they all seem populated by cigarette smokers who come in and out for a quick cig, I stopped bringing my own cigars on board.

Not to long ago we were on the Coral. My husband loved that Churchill’s because of the windows to look out while smoking. I understand the sister ship, Island is the same.  
 

Does anyone know any other ships that have the same type of windows. Most of them are like dungeons.

It was a "dungeon" on the Star.  We did have a bar there and very good crew working it.  They were always emptying ash trays, wiping tables, and available.  If a "regular" came in that smoked cigars, they would immediately take a cigar ashtray over to their table without even being asked.  Well worth extra tips for them (lol)

The only thing that comes close as far as your description is the old "Wake View Bar" that is down the stairs at the back of Club Fusion on the Diamond and the Sapphire.

I thought they took them out of use years ago. You can see them/stairs on the aft port side of Club Fusion next to the bandstand but they are not named anymore.

Still shown on the deck plans - but, of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's still in use. I meant to check this out last fall when we sailed on Sapphire Princess but totally forgot. Perhaps I'll remember to look for it when we sail her again this winter.

Yeah, I'm not at all sure they even let you go down those stairs. We sailed Sapphire for 12 days in October and, if there was a active bar down there I'm pretty sure I would have noticed. 😁

Well, probably got it mixed up with Princess and that Churchill may well have been on one of the other lines I'v cruised with.

Just got off the Star Princess and have some information that might be useful regarding smoking on that ship.  I am mobility challenged with an arthritic knee and walking long distances is a problem..  I was on this ship two years ago and there was a nice smoking area on Deck 14 outside near the bar.   I chose an aft cabin near the elevator because it is an easy reach to that smoking area, the Lido and the lounges  on Deck 7 plus that smoking area.  The only long walks I would need would be to the dining rooms.  I get on the ship, head for Deck 14.  It is now not a smoking area.  Go down to Deck 7 where there is an outside corner on the deck with no chairs and a wall mounted ashtray.  Since it is on the Promenade deck you get walkers going by (it is a very narrow area so they really have no choice to get away from it) with the typical results of fanning  faces, holding their noses, smart remarks, and dirty looks.  That was closed due to embarkation.  Next up was a very nice area on Deck 15 but far forward.  Ooops, that was closed too.  The only other choice was the sport's bar.  The joke among us is that you don't need to take your smoking items, just step in there and inhale  and is the only place where cigars and pipes are allowed (lol).  It is, also, far forward.  There were times during the cruise that the sport's bar was the only place to smoke on the ship as they would close the other areas down due to high wind, crew drills, and port necessities.  On the positive side, a lot of the crew members would huddle by the Deck 7 place for some nice conversation with them.  It cut down on my smoking because I would have to want a smoke mighty bad to hike to the other areas so it cut back on that which was good.  

I smoke 4 or 5 cigarettes a day.  I don't understand why cruise ships don't just post the designated smoking areas for each ship on their websites.  It just makes sense.  Like you, I don't want to offend people with my smoking ... and I don't want to ride on an elevator and walk the length of the ship from my cabin.  So why not just TELL ME before I make my booking?  Then I can chose a cabin that's convenient for me.

@jsn55...Doesn't that just make too much sense?  I always book through Princess, and even the agents don't seem to know for sure where the smoking area will be!

Not only by publishing where the smoking areas are on each ship it helps the smokers and

also the non smokers to be able to select cabins and avoid these areas if they would like.

Its not like they change the areas

Take a peek at the date of the first post in this thread. 2012......

The Princess smoking policy changed years ago.

This thread is just for that, Discuss Princess smoking policy.

People are just posting their recent experience. 

IMO........for the most part the smoking areas have stayed the same since those major changes.

As the new ships come out there are some tweaks happening once in awhile.

Has anyone read/heard the smoking policy for the quarantined Diamond Princess and now the conditions on Grand Princess?  Especially cigar smokers?

From reading what has happened with the Diamond Princess, there was no smoking anywhere until the people were allowed to go out for supervised walks. During their walk they were allowed to smoke outside in the designated area.

Does anyone know if there is a listing of where the designated smoking areas are on each ship? If so, what page is it? I keep seeing requests for individual ships, and it a[[ears it would be easier for one list.

The only thing I have ever seen was Smoking Policies for each cruise line. I never seen anything about were you can smoke on each ship.

No specific list, but all Princess ships have the same smoking policy as explained in the FAQ's under Onboard Experience. Actual smoking areas can be adjusted on each ship based on the market and local regulations. The ship's smoking areas are usually detailed in the Princess Patter.
