Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

Predisclosure - Not a smoker.  Grateful that is one habit I never took up, but grew up with smokers. (Sorry - they both passed away due to smoking related diseases, so I might be a little biased.)

I am hoping with all the Covid-19 issues, the cruise ships will consider limiting the smoking areas even more.  I enjoy the casino, but dread going in there because of all the smoke.  And yes, they say part of the casino is non-smoking, but any non-smoker knows, the room is not large enough, nor ventilated enough to block out the smoke anywhere in there.  And generally, on the non-smoking nights, the Casino is always very crowded.  That should tell the cruise lines something.

They do have the Cigar/smoking room and a few other areas to smoke.  I understand the addiction and enjoyment some have and that they need a place to go.

Also, the comment one person made about disabled people eating too much doesn't make sense.  Are they disabled because they eat too much or do they retain their weight because they are disabled and can't exercise as much.  Also, their eating does not affect another person's health where second hand smoke definitely affects those around them.  So, not a fair comparison.

I totally agree. However you are opening up a can of worms. The smokers will go after you now. Now they will come after me also. I am a past smoker. I quit about 35 years ago. I am 75 now and in great health. I want to stay that way. Guess, they just have to take it out on others that they smoke and you cannot tell them what to do. However, it is proven. Second hand smoke dies cause cancer. One thing that irritated me about the vaccine when they put smokers ahead of others. I am going to get hit hard now. I know what it was like. Get up in the morning and the first thing I did was light up. Can not have a coffee with out that cigarette. Can't stand you own smoke in the car so you open a window even if it is pouring rain or freezing outside of the car. Smoke while your children are in the car. Smoke breaks at work. On and on. If you can smoke while working, a cigarettes' is always lit next to you. I know, it is a bad habit. One I quit cold turkey.

Original Grand Class ships have the cigar bar, Grand, Sapphire, Diamond. I feel bad for the bar tenders that work that bar, exposed to smoke all shift. Other ships have the lounges. Not staffed, but there are crew that go in and out, frequently exposed to dense 2nd hand smoke. Ships need to consider the health of their crew.

Hi All looking at booking the Regal Princess Deck 8 , I dont mind obstruction but quiet and no smoking from the deck below is a consideration

so if smoking is still allowed on the Prom deck 7 is it just 1 area of this deck? on 1 side?  or all over?

odd or evven cabin side?

trying to see which cabins to avoid

We don’t smoke, but I seem to remember that promenade deck, starboard side far aft, we saw people smoking. This would have been on the Royal/Regal.  Also, casino allows smoking, except for formal nights.  There’s also a cigar lounge.

Look at the deck plans for deck 7. You will see 4 patios, 2 mid ship and 2 aft. Cigarette only smoking is permitted on a section of the starboard (odd) aft patio. The other 3 are smoke free.

Considering that low count. I find it hard to believe a non smoking ship would have any problems. Certainly 14 or 15% would not give enough revenue towards drinking and gambling to make that big of difference. I must be wrong.

One of the big money makers on the cruise lines are groups,  in particular, large families celebrating a special event. .  One or two might be a smoker and refuses to cruise on a ship that does not allow smoking.   Then, the whole group could be  lost to a line that does allow limited smoking in order to keep "Uncle George" happy or others in a like minded group.

I remember having a cigar in Churchills on my last trip on the Caribbean Princess years ago.  Out of the blue the Captain comes in to have a smoke & and a bump at the end of the day.  He took about15 minutes just to shoot the breeze and unwind with me & the DW.  A very cool experience indeed.

is cigarette smoking allowed in Churchills?

We’re debating between Celebrity and Princess for Jan 2022.

We know Celebrity doesn’t allow smoking in the casino (a huge perk for us) but not sure what’s Princess’s policy.  We’ve found various sites with conflicting info

One says it’s allowed and the other days it’s only allowed at certain slot machines.

We’re kicking around either the Sky or the Caribbean Princess

Does anyone know the facts

No smoking at table games. 1/2 of the slot area is non smoking. On formal nights the entire casino is non smoking. On many ships the cigar bar is near the entrance and with people going in and out the odor can linger

I don't know about the Sky Princess but, Princess does have  a policy                                           ,  Smoking Policy ;The legal purchasing and smoking age of 18 (19 while in Alaska*) years or older is always observed on board and proof of age may be required. *For guests on cruises originating from Japan, the minimum age limit for smoking is 20 years of age or older. Keeping the comfort of our guests a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of guests, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy: Designated Smoking Areas clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available on board and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub, as well as a portion of the open decks. As a safety precaution, guests are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as these may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires. Princess Cruises prohibits smoking in guest staterooms and balconies. This policy reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our guests who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies

are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the guest’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our guests, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience. Electronic Cigarettes The use of electronic cigarettes are permitted within the confines of the guest’s stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only"

Smoking allowed at some slots while playing. Those slots are marked. On the Caribbean these were slots on the port side. The remainder of the casino including the casino bar and table games are smoke free. Formal nights the casino is totally smoke free. As a life long non smoker I have not found smoke to be a difficult issue in the remainder of the casino away from the smoking slots. Churchill's cigar lounge on both the Sky and the Caribbean is not within the casino. On the Sky the cigar lounge entrance is on the port side of the forward elevator/stairway lobby. On the Caribbean Churchill's is forward on deck 6 and the casino is on deck 7.

I was on ONE (maybe TWO) cruise where they alternated nights for non-smoking in the Casino, but lately it just seems formal nights.  I am a fan of formal nights just for this policy.  Wish it was for more nights.  At least they have it down to a small section now and the new builds have pretty good ventilation systems.  When we had the every-other-night thing, I do not think they had yet banned it from table games and half the slots.

I have not been preaching at all. If someone wants to smoke fine but if you are going to smoke in the casino then play slots don’t just hang out there. But they won’t go to Churchill’s because it stinks to high heaven in there

I'm an ex-smoker. I smoked for over 20 years and quit cold turkey 31 (32?) years ago. When I quit I was smoking unfiltered Camels. I had also previously been through a period (poor) when I rolled my own Bugler and Top cigarettes and even collected and re-rolled the butts. Currently I hate the smell (stink) of cigarettes.

However, I still feel sympathy for those who smoke cigars as the only sanctioned place onboard to smoke them is in Churchill's and they have to put up with all the cigarette smokers who invade their domain. Most of them despise cigarette smoke. This is the one place they are "legally" allowed to smoke cigars and they are bombarded with cigarette smoke. I guess the same applies to the (rare) pipe smokers. They too dislike the stink of cigarette smoke and have their only sanctioned area invaded.

He is probably correct. Same with a smoking Casino. Smoking in only certain designated areas in a casino lowers the smoke. But it still travels throughout the casino anyhow. Just a bit less in certain areas. It would ne nice if they installed heavy smoke filtering and clean up the air. I have seen ON the casino bar, portable filters used at the end of the bar where smoking is permitted. It helps about half of the bar.

On a Princess ship? Quote from the smoking policy posted in the Princess Patter. "The Casino and Casino Bar are nonsmoking areas onboard,...."

Smoking at all bars on Princess ships stopped awhile ago - casino bar was the last to stop smoking I believe but it has not been allowed for at least the last few years

Even though there’s no smoking in the casino bar it’s still stinks of cigarette smoke. 🤭
