MHarrington11 Posted January 31, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Anyone have any pics of the night sky from the ocean? I'm going on my first cruise in 11 days and wondering how the stars look from the boat. I love astronomy and the night sky and I'm hoping with the lack of ambiant light, the stars will be crazy good. Any input? Or pics? Thanks:)
wstxn Posted January 31, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 31, 2012 There is so much light on board the ship, it is hard to get a good view :( I have heard that sometimes the captain will dim all the overhead lights for a few minutes, but I have never seen that happen. It is disappointing, but there is so much more to do and going on, you will not dwell on not having the opportunity to see the night sky. Good luck and if you find a good spot on ship for viewing, please post when you get back. Have a great 1st cruise! You will love it.
vacruizer Posted January 31, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 31, 2012 I've never seen much more in the way of stars than I do at home. The ship is pretty much lit up like a Christmas tree so it blocks a lot of the view. I have seen a metor shower at sea which was pretty cool. afcruiser Posted January 31, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 31, 2012 We we on a cruise in 07 with hubby, 2 sons, and my brother and his family. We had a balcony. One night we had a full moon and a Lunar Eclipse. There was also another ship passing in the night. Truly phenomenol sight. Took pic's however didn't turn out. I told my kids we'll propably never see anything like it again. The Captains of the ships did signal each other by turning various ship lights on and off. Wish I was there right now.:p
kittykat27 Posted January 31, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 31, 2012 I don't have any pictures of the stars, but I do have some pretty cool pictures of the moon, and of course some sunrise pictures :)
MHarrington11 Posted January 31, 2012 Author #6 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Thanks for the responses guys! I hope to see some cool skys but I'm sure I'll have a blast ether way. The stars just seem to have a magic way of relaxing me which is great sight in a nice lounge chair on a cruise:cool: Great pics kitty! Atthew78 Posted February 2, 2012 #7 Share Posted February 2, 2012 Your best bet will be at the front of the ship near the bridge. They keep the lights the lowest there to help with night vision. I do wish they you turn the lights off most people have never seen the milky way but I am sure that would be a safety issue.
PaCUfan Posted February 2, 2012 #8 Share Posted February 2, 2012 Entirely too much light onboard to see stars. The sunrise and sunset, however, are breath taking :D
sandij Posted February 2, 2012 #9 Share Posted February 2, 2012 You will have to find a dark spot and there are a few on each ship, just walk around at night. and the balconies are darker, if your neighbor doesn't have their light on.
kcdancerkc Posted February 2, 2012 #10 Share Posted February 2, 2012 We sat on one of the very back decks on the Sensation - and the stars were a wonderfullllll surprise! I don't remember any glaring ship lights from that vantage, all I remember is that it was amazing
bonnie&clydecruzers Posted February 2, 2012 #11 Share Posted February 2, 2012 Your best bet for stargazing would be the very front or very back of the ship. I do make a trip to the very front of the ship atleast once every cruise and I see a TON of stars. Good luck.

The front of the ship is the way to go. They have to keep it dark for the bridge.
sailaway4 Posted February 2, 2012 #14 Share Posted February 2, 2012 We were excited to see another ship (can't remember now which one,but Carnival) ahead of us in the dark. Got to see what "we" looked like. Don't remember seeing stars.

Colorado Kat Posted February 2, 2012 #16 Share Posted February 2, 2012 I love going to the front of the ship, on the deck below the bridge. The stars are amazing.

Thanks:) Depending on which ship you are cruising, if you go either below or above the bridge (can't remember which) the lights are turned off and you can get some amazing views of the stars. My hubby and I did this on the Carnival Valor and though it was a bit spooky (really dark!) it was soooo neat! Seemed like the whole sky was just lit up! :p
