Doing Cruise on 31st March, how good are Thomson for Gluten Free ?

Also what is Maderia and Canarys like for Gluten Free food ?

We haven't been on the Destiny but have been on Celebration & Spirit with 3 Coeliacs in the family - could not fault them both with gluten free. Assume you have already notified Thomson that you need a GF diet?

 

Upon arrival on the Celebration we got a letter asking us to go & meet with the Maitre'd who ran through everything for us, took us to the Lido deck & introduced us to the Head Waiters & Head Chef to talk to for any information we might need. They provided us with GF bread, they did us the same menu as everyone else but marked on it the choices that were or could be made GF.

 

First morning, we asked if they could make GF pancakes and from then on they brought them to us (whether we wanted them or not :) !).

 

Afternoon tea was a bit hit & miss - they provided biscuits & on the Spirit they did make sandwiches however it was with the bread that needs refreshing & they never got the hang of refreshing it so it was a bit hard! We got to know the Head chef on the Spirit & he was fantastic - he made gf desserts & hand-made biscuits which he gave us for afternoon tea! (we would often have a big breakfast, go out till mid afternoon so skip lunch & have afternoon tea instead!)

 

We took a couple of pizza bases and they made them up into pizzas for us on Lido deck for lunch a couple of times. They provided GF pasta in the evening if we wanted it and there was always GF dessert in the evening including Baked Alaska, Banoffi Pie, Creme Brule, Bread & Butter pudding, crumble - yum!!

 

Didn't eat in Canaries or Maderia when we did the Colourful Coasts - we just ate a big breakfast & then afternoon tea!

 

I am sure the Destiny must be as good at catering for the GF diet - just make yourself known and you will sure to be well looked after. We are heading back on the Celebration this summer - cruising with Thomson are the best holidays for us due to the GF diet being so well catered for !!!

 

By the way, you won't get a GF meal on the flight anymore so you will need to take your own food! (The snack menu they now offer is certainly a no-go for GF!)

I feel much better about the cruise now, will report back (going 31st March), will see how good Destiny is.

We did several trips - did Madeira on our own - took the open top bus around Funchal and up the cable car and down by Toboggan (expensive but had to be done and was great fun!), DIY in Gran Canaria (but wished we'd done the open top bus as the Madeira one after was so good!) did Taraoudant in Morocco, Volcanoes & Wine in La Palma and Timanfaya & camel ride in Lanzarote (had been there before pre-children but wanted to take them to show them the fasinating landscape!). Think that was all the places we went to - it was a lovely cruise (bit choppy sailing over to Morrocco!)

 

Have a great time - I understand that Ray Bauer is currently the Cruise Director on Destiny - we saw him on Spirit and he was excellent!
