Norovirus

Most hand sanitizers do not kill norovirus. There are some that do. That doesn't mean you shouldn't still wash your hands, but when you can't, Clorox Bleach Free Hand Sanitizer and Purell Advanced both kill noro.

The Clorox ones definitely do, I carry one around everywhere especially when traveling! And thanks to Amazon you can get a six pack delivered with two day shipping. :classic_biggrin:

Of course.

John,

how are are they handling the casino?  Is it open and everyone is wiping down every slot after every use and they’re washing all the chips? I’d think there would be too much of a financial impact to shut that down.  Even though you’d think that’s the one venue where germ spreading would be more rampant.  I’m on Oasis in 4 weeks.

Same here. The last number mentioned was 2% which would be 120 passengers out of 6,000.  That's known cases. Double it for unreported cases and that's about 240 sick passengers and 5,750 healthy passengers.

I wonder what's the threshold to return early and offer a refund to so many people. Ive only skimmed the thread & I've seen a  mention of a full refund and OBC for port missed.

Your assuming no crew are sick.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the ship doctor is making complimentary visits to your stateroom to give you a checkup and meds if needed. Royal deserves a gold star for the way they are handling this in my opinion.

PS.... I'm still ok. My husband stayed in bed all day yesterday (day 2 of the virus) and was able to eat the BRAT diet. He is sleeping now and I'm hoping he will feel better today. We have not called the doc nor have we reported his illness. I bet there are others who have not reported so the numbers of those infected are probably higher than they think.

Yes I did report to our cabin steward immediately.  Guess i should have made that clear.  I believe i said we did not report to a doctor because there isn't anything they can do....they are treating with over the counter meds, which i always bring when we are on vacation, just in case. If my husband's symptoms did not improve after the first night of symptoms, of course we would have taken advantage of the medical treatment offered.  It also seems to me that the staff should treat every cabin as if it's been infected, since no one can really be sure if they have been affected until they are actually sick.  If i were trying to HIDE it, I don't think I would be stupid enough to post on a public site!  I chose to post in order to inform others of what is going on.  Sheesh. Get off your judgemental horses. I'm out.

You posted that you had not gone to the doctor nor have you reported his illness, that is very different than reporting it to you cabin steward immediately.  Since you are now saying you did report your husbands illness to the cabin steward, I am very surprised that you are allowed to roam the ship.  The cabin steward is required to report the illness so that precautions can be taken.

I didn't think the crew would be getting a full refund and OBC for missed ports.

Seriously, assuming that the reported 2% holds and that all sick crew members are accounted for, that add 50-60 more people to the sick list, about 300 total.

Pretty sure it was about the number sick, not the number getting OBC.

For what it's worth, RC is now saying that 3.3% of passengers and crew have come down with Noro:

Returning early to stop the spread and give more time to clean the ship. Makes sense. Again, just wondering what the threshold to make the decision is, if there is a threshold.

" "We think the right thing to do is to get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health," Royal Caribbean said in the statement. "Returning on Saturday also gives us more time to completely clean and sanitize the ship before her next sailing."

Now to the follow up question. Do you use it to clean the elevator buttons before you touch them?  Or do you use a paper towel to press the buttons.  How do  you handle the lounges when you need to pull back a chair to sit.  I am sure thousands of people have touched that elevator button since it was last cleaned with any type of sanitizing solution.  Who knows about the various chairs you sit in.

In the past I used my knuckle to punch elevator buttons. Now I use the handle of my cane. This cruise I haven’t had to pull back any chairs, staff does it for me. The only lounge we have used this cruise is the Diamond and I haven’t had to adjust seats so far.   We have advanced Purell that gets used after sitting down anywhere. Washing, washing and sanitizing, my palms feel slick. You can’t even go into a shop aboard without using sanitizer.

At first I was upset that we weren’t seated with anyone else (hubby needed easy access seating) but now I am glad to be alone at a table. You just never know about other people’s habits.

I do have a pair of nitril gloves that I keep for my thrift shop treasure hunts but that might be a bit of overkill. If things get worse I may reconsider.

We got a letter.  Full refund to method of payment within 2 weeks.   Helping with hotels and flights, etc.  I'm on hold with guest services to see if they'll put a call through to the timeshare we are scheduled to check into Sunday to see if there is availability for Saturday checkin.

They have been washing everything down, menus etc.  They have someone serving at the soft serve machines, etc. They brought on extra medical personnel yesterday when we were docked in Jamaica.   Assume they brought more meds with them.  Understand they are querying anyone who is sick looking for an original source, i.e., planes, hotels, where they ate.

More than 2% now.

Just curious- do they do anything special for people who had flights scheduled this weekend?  Do they help finding a hotel?  Do they pay for hotel?

There are extra personnel around the guest relations desk helping to get airline reservations and such changed. I don’t know if they are putting people up at a hotel.

They are providing free internet access so people can rebook their travel arrangements.  They are offering up to $200 per stateroom hotel reimbursement OR some amount for flight changes ( I did not memorize details of letter we all received in our staterooms).  Crew are being diligent, of course.  DH and I are well.  We are in the DL over flow lounge, which has lots of healthy looking loyalty members tonight.  Cheers.

Sending positive thoughts out there, to all of you impacted by this!  DH and I had Noro on Norwegian, many years ago.  It was widespread, but the cruise continued it’s course.  Being sick was definitely not fun!  DH didn’t let me know he was sick (he didn’t want me to miss our fun horseback riding) and he passed out on the dock!  Thankfully, there was a random Dr nearby who helped me, and everything worked out ok (then I got symptoms 2 hours later).

Dear All, From reading the letter sent to all the passengers RCI/RCCL has 'stepped up to the plate' and is doing the right thing by its passengers.  I take back everything negative I assumed of this cruise line, in their prior treatment of me in regard to booking penalties. They deserve kudos for their monetary reimbursement of their passengers. The decision to return early to give them time to sanitize the ship is also very commendable, giving future passengers the confidence to sail with them.
