obxgirl Posted February 13, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 13, 2012 Just watched this special. Lots of things done wrong but most amazing to me was lying to the Coast Gaurd that there was just an electrical problem. My heart is with those who lost family members. TMLAalum Posted February 13, 2012 #14 Share Posted February 13, 2012 The stories of the dancer rescued by helicopter and the couple from Arkansas who jumped from the deck and swam to shore bothered me most of all. All the lifeboats were gone and they and the remaining people still aboard had very few options for survival. Even those who were able to get aboard lifeboats were traumatized by their experience. It was appalling to learn that officers in the engine room knew that with three compartments breached the Concordia was doomed and yet the "Abandon Ship" announcement was not made until much later. The 11,000 euro offer by Costa to all uninjured survivors seems a pittance and no monetary amount can ever compensate for those who lost their loved ones due to the decisions of the officers that fateful night. Rare TLCOhio Posted February 13, 2012 #16 Share Posted February 13, 2012 From watching most of this program last night, I was impressed with how they "told the story" using so many different interviews with passengers and staff who had been on the ship, plus the various cell phone video segments that told the story as if you were "inside" as this was happening. Very chilling and enlightening. Sad!! I'm not sure how Costa and/or Carnival ever explain this one to future customers. It's hard to trust people who are so bad both during the incident, plus since that time. THANKS! Terry in Ohio Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 64,098 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at: http://www.boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1426474 As we did our sail-away on the Solstice in Barcelona, this was the view of our next-door docking neighbor, a Costa ship with their unique yellow "C" stack. Just recently, I looked more closely at this picture to see that it is the now infamous Concordia that, sadly, will not be sailing out of Barcelona any more. As you can see, it was clearly a nice-looking ship. Such a tragedy! In the background of my picture, you can see the unique curved shaped of the fairly new W Hotel that is located overlooking the main Barcelona beach area.:

I have to ask myself. Had I been one of the engine room officers, would I have 'encouraged' (physically!) the captain to order an abandon ship? Yes, I think I would have. If I knew for a fact that the ship was going to sink and stood by watching the mess unfold, I would feel pretty guilty right now. Guilt by omission. helen haywood Posted February 13, 2012 #19 Share Posted February 13, 2012 What was amazing to me....and I had not heard this before....is that the Coast Guard received notification of the ship in distress only from people aboard using their phones and reporting it!! 24butterfly Posted February 13, 2012 #20 Share Posted February 13, 2012 The show made a mistake when it said something to the effect that it was the "Captain" who said to go to the muster station or ev'thing is ok--it was the CRUISE DIRECTOR.... atb Posted February 14, 2012 #21 Share Posted February 14, 2012 Through the entire show - we were trying to figure out how we would have reacted to the entire situation. I can't imagine what that would have been like for the younger girl and her brothers - running from lifeboat to lifeboat - all full. DH knows some Italian - mostly the swear words, and he understood alot of the audio.
