I'm sure I'll be shot down for this, but how about a little empathy on these boards! People don't buy travel insurance to cover Anbesol and bandaids, and the original poster's sentiments re: being ripped off by a cruise industry giant are well-taken. If people on these boards feel $90 for this oral anesthetic is not complaint-worthy, then this board is not for me! Reminds me of the time I DARED to post a mixed/negative review of the Oasis - you would have thought, from the responses I received, that Cruise Critic members had built the ship themselves! Lighten up!

But he was probably charged for a doctor's visit; they weren't selling Anbesol for $90 in the gift shop. I've bought otc meds in the shop and they are definitely overpriced, but not that overpriced.

Wow, so sorry to hear about that. I hope your son was able to make it thru w/little pain (I didn't read all the way thru). I am surprised there wasn't something in the general store. I guess that had to make everyone miserable and $90, that's ridiculous.

 

Well maybe if he had to see someone at the Promenade cafe for a ham and cheese croissant it would be ridiculous, but if he wanted to see a licensed MD, on a cruise ship, in the middle of the ocean, maybe it's not so bad.

First i want to say we just had a great 8 day cruise on the Navigator of the Seas. But.....it was the day before going to our last stop in Labadee and my son came down with a huge canker sore inside his mouth. We tried the salt thing but it wouldnt touch it so we went to the infirmary. They wanted to sell us a small tube of ambesol for guess how much........$90.00 BUCKS!!!!!!!! Ater paying all that money for the cruise plus what we spent onboard......what a slap in the face by RC! :mad::mad::mad:

 

90 dollars for a tube of cream is indeed excessive, however, you may find, as suggested by others, that this is to meet the costs of the medical staff, who are not employed by RCI. If that is the case, you will be able to recover the cost through your insurance. I hope the mouth problem is now OK.

 

On a recent trip on the Independence of the Sea,s, I had an accident with a glass (totally sober) in front of three members of staff.

I was escorted to the medical centre, where the wound was stiched by excellent medical staff.

My wife had to fill out a number of accident forms while this was happening and I had to give a statement to the head of security.

I recieved three calls from the customer service manager over the next three days to ask if I was alright.

 

I was not charged anything by the company.

While I have not cruised RC yet, my daughter has. She got that artificial turf in her eye while playing miniature golf at night. She said it was breezy. I don't recall now 6 years later what the dollar amont was, but it was resonable. Exam, they had to put something in her eye to view the scratches, + 2 prescriptions, I wanna say like $200 total. We have medical insurance, but the ship doesn't accept it. Pay at the time of service, submit to ins. for reimbursement. Easier said than done. The paper they give you that says what they did, diagnosis, prescriptions, cost, physicians name etc. was pretty much illegible. That and the fact that these doctors are not licensed in your home country also is a bit of an issue. Royal Caribbean, also would not get me a better copy of the paper work. I had to argue with my ins. company, but after many phone calls & almost a years time they did reimburse for the office visit & prescriptions. My daughter now advises that you should where sunglasses when playing mini golf (we will not be playing at night).

 

I always travel with a pharmacy, but unfortunately you can't prevent everything.

I am prone to canker sores if I get stressed or my immune system is compromised. $90 seems outrageously expensive, but when you have a canker sore, you will do whatever you can to alleviate the pain. And especially with a child experiencing it! I feel for you OP. And no, I am not encouraging RCCL to charge that much!

 

As a side note, zilactin-b is the best thing I have ever used. I can't even imagine using vinegar. It would hurt like the dickens.

Those sores are viruses..usually a 14 day cycle..7 days coming..7 days going. Ambesol is very caustic..nasty stuff...warm salt water rinses can help alleviate the pain.

 

You can't prepare for everything...but we also take a mini "pharmacy" bag with us...last cruise I happened to sit next to a gentleman who had just lost his dental bridgework...I ate my lunch..grabbed my recement kit and went to his cabin and recemented his bridgework for him.:)

The other thing you could have done is asked your fellow travelers for something for the canker sore- as so many are saying, they travel with mini-pharms and someone is sure to come up with some cure. I too travel with all sorts of meds, etc, and have helped others out countless times with things to help them feel better. Just have to ask your friends, and they can ask their new friends..... word gets around and soon enough you may just have what you need.

And BTW, superglue works wonders for repairing teeth- my dentist told me about using it in a pinch.

You got off CHEAP!!

 

In 1997 our daughter had an allergic reaction to something she came in contact with while in Cozumel. The back of her hand swelled up like a balloon. Went to the ships (NCL) Doc and he gave us some Benedryl. Guess what it cost us then? $90 BUCKS!!

 

I know a guy who recently sailed X. While on board, he booked a shore excursion for the following day. Woke up in the morning not feeling real well, so he went to the desk to ask about cancelling the excursion. Was told no refund without a note from the ships Doc. Went to the infirmary and was told it would be $150 just to see the Doc. Not to mention the cost for diagnosis / cure. Wasn't worth that kind of money to get the $80.00 excursion price back.

Unfortunately the ship store has a very limited selection of items. My DD got a pretty bad sunburn on the backs of her legs after a day at the beach in Aruba. I went to the store for some Aloe gel, but there was none to be had. I was really grasping to find something becasue DD was in a lot of pain and the Ibuprofin just wasn't cutting it. So I went to the spa. I was sold a bottle of lotion that I was guaranteed would make her feel better in less that 24 hours. $44 for a bottle of very thin lotion. The only reason it made her feel better was because it was cold (and mommy always had to apply it - I gues that helped too.) Don't fall for the spa products as sunburn cures (lesson learned).

 

She suffered for several days until our tablemates said, "We brought several small bottles of Aloe and sent her teenage son to get one of them.

 

We will never travel without Aloe again.

 

P.S. Sunscreen was used but not applied often enough - another lesson learned.

I'm grateful I read this thread! It reminded me of a couple more things to add to my "everything but the kitchen sink" bag- dental wax in case my daughter breaks a wire on her braces (the darn things come off a few months after the cruise!), orajel, hydrocortisone/benedryl cream, eye drops, possibly super glue, and ... bandaids. Yeah, don't know why those weren't already on the list.

 

I agree with the others- the fee was probably the charge for the visit, and if so, then it wasn't terribly unreasonable given where you were.

If there is a next time, try vinegar :) I like it much better for relief than Aloe gel. Surely you could gather up some vinegar somewhere on the ship for free.

Vitamin E works well for fever blisters on the lips....might even help a canker sore. We always take a bag of medical supplies, including an ankle wrap(for sprained ankle). Last cruise, for the first time, I also packed an ice bag. I didn't need it, but loaned it to a fellow cc member for his swolen ankle. Always carry extra RXs incase we are delayed getting home, sunscreen, aloe, antibiotic ointment, antiitch ointment, tylenol, bandaids, nasal spray, cough lozenges, pepto tabs, needle, thread, button, safety pins, tweezers, cotton balls and qtips.....and bottle opener and wine corkscrew.....:eek::Doh, those are for other needs. There are some great packing lists on cc.

90.00 INCLUDING the visit really isnt that bad at all. Anyone without insurance would likely pay that or more to see their local Dr or minute clinic AND still have to buy the prescription or OTC med prescribed.

I could not put a price on taking care of my children. Its what we are here for in the USA or out. I guess its of use to some on cc though.:rolleyes:

 

Yes but it sucks paying a 1000% increase, regardless.
