cdamion Posted March 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2012 Several months ago I posted on here that I was going to start putting change into a funnel cup for some spending money on my next cruise. Well, I leave Tuesday for a business trip followed by the cruise, so I have opened up the cup so I can bring the change to the bank. I did slip a $100 bill in there a couple of months ago when somebody gave it to me towards a very high restaurant bill, so that is more than half. I also occasionally slipped a little bit of paper money from time to time. It was stuffed so full not one more dime could fit in there. Here is what I got: Pennies = 1.37 Nickels = 2.30 Dimes = 7.00 Quarters = 60.00 Dollar Coin = 1.00 Dollar bills = 14.00 5-dollar bill = 5.00 100-dollar bill = 100.00 Grand total: $190.67 Oh, and there were 2 driving range tokens too. (they are something like 3.50 each at my golf course) Here are the riches:

Megan_Strick Posted March 18, 2012 #6 Share Posted March 18, 2012 I have one of those 5 gallon water bottles from the water coolers things. I never use to carry cash but try to all the time now and purposely break a dollar so I can have the change. I always throw it in there along with bills and that is how I save for my vacations. You would be amazed how much money you can save just by breaking a dollar for the change.
wdowns9 Posted March 18, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 18, 2012 Our funnel cup banks (both of them) average around $88 each per fill up and we use the $$ for our cruises. Our grandchild also uses her's for the same thing. They make nice banks providing you are not tempted to tap the funnel. Hopefully others are doing the same with theirs or might get a cup on their next cruise.
celticd1 Posted March 18, 2012 #8 Share Posted March 18, 2012 We've been using an old jar to save our change in for the past few years...I think I'm going to get one of those funnel cups on our next cruise to use instead! :)

We have one of those too, bur DH won't part with the money in there until it is filled to the top and he can't put another coin in there. I know it won't be filled by July 1. I will tell you something about those water coolers....................it isn't fun when you have to empty that big thing . I don't. I tell my husband, "You wanted to fill it to the top, then you bring it to the bank." He happily does. Guess will have to keep filling it for another vacation. :)
JKJG3 Posted March 18, 2012 #12 Share Posted March 18, 2012 We do the same thing for our yearly cruise, getting out the change and small bills out of the funnel cup the day before we leave. It always makes for good tipping, taxi, walking around money. Only problem is that even from just a couple of years ago, I seem to use so much less cash. I've started transferring the difference to the next dollar (i.e. 15 cents on a 4.85 purchase) to my savings from checking anytime I use my debit card. It all adds up! anjoliza Posted March 18, 2012 #13 Share Posted March 18, 2012 I use the funnel cup too. Here in Canada we don't have paper $1 or $2's - we have coins - a loonie is our $1 coin and a twoonie is our $2 coin. I only save those and it usually amounts to over $500 by the time I open it up :D

Exactly!! It's funny how I now hate to spend a loonie or twoonie - I'd much rather break a larger dollar bill and get more loonies/toonies :D There have been times when I have to rob from it though
skye02 Posted March 19, 2012 #16 Share Posted March 19, 2012 We've been saving all our change since Christmas when I received a money jar that keeps track of the amount deposited. Since the end of December, we've saved almost 105.00 and it is less than a quarter full! The change adds up at an unbelievable pace. Our original plan was to cash it in for tip & gas money for the Sept cruise, but now we've decided to keep saving and see if we can pay for next year's cruise with spare change. jrmende63 Posted March 19, 2012 #17 Share Posted March 19, 2012 I pick up pennies I find on the street. I have collected over 20.00 in free money in just a few months. It will be used for my casino money!

sjcruiser Posted March 19, 2012 #19 Share Posted March 19, 2012 We collect in a 5 gallon water bottle. We never fill it up, but for our major yearly cruise/vacation we've saved between $500-$600. Pays for our tips, DOD, and some other onboard purchases. We cash in the change 30 days before our cruise, and add it to our onboard account beforehand.
