LSilver Posted April 26, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 26, 2005 That's the Atlantic side all right -- one of my favorite Canal memories.
tbelian Posted April 26, 2005 #3 Share Posted April 26, 2005 Very very interesting. While watching the transit, I learned some interesting stuff. That ship BARELY fits through there. 106 foot beam is the maximum they allow and Infinity is 105.6. 965 is the maximum length they allow, and Infinity is 965. Not any real margin for errror there. Rare mahdnc Posted April 26, 2005 #4 Share Posted April 26, 2005 Very very interesting. While watching the transit, I learned some interesting stuff. The US military was able to negotiate an exception to this and so the large battleships like the New Jersy which have crossed the Canal have a beam of 108' 1". She and her sisters are the widest ships to ever transit--at least according to our tour guide when we were on the Canal Ferry last month. The Panama Canal webcam actually has some footage on file that you can view on their website of the New Jersey going through the Minaflores Locks in 1999: New Jersey Canal Transit
