Rare 1025cruise Posted April 7, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 7, 2012 You will need to be prepared with any bridging documents to show your ID matches the reservation.
SewMuch Posted April 7, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 7, 2012 For most married women their birth certificate doesn't match their ID, such as driver's license, they know that. Thats not a problem - the purpose of your birth certificate is to prove you were born in the US and the Photo ID is to prove who you are. Thats why you need both. FYI - I don't know where you live but in Ohio, if you want legal proof that you are married you have to get it from the probate court. What most people have at home is just a certificate of marriage that the official that married you gave to you on your wedding day. Its pretty but not legal proof. Then the person who performed the ceremony signs the Marriage License (the official document that you got at the courthouse and brought to the church) stating that you are really married and sends it into the court, where it goes on file. You don't automatically get a copy of this, you have to ask the court for it (just like a birth certificate). Sometimes a wife needs it to get pension benefits and I think Social Security wants it also to apply for benefits. But its NOT necessary to cruise. kitty9 Posted April 7, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 7, 2012 In 66 cruises I've never been asked for my marriage license or divorce decree. As long as the name on your cruise reservation matches the name on your photo ID, you'll be fine. But, if your reservation names don't match, you'll need your marriage license. Better yet, get a passport and you won't have any problems.
2Cruise4Ever Posted April 7, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 7, 2012 Before we got our passports, I always brought our marriage license with us. I was never asked for it. Someone told me that if my last name matches my husband's, then they typically don't ask for it. But, I still wouldn't have taken the chance. Sinjan Posted April 7, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 7, 2012 I've been on two cruises. The first one the lady at Port Canaveral wanted to see it. Second cruise out of NOLA, she didn't. Personally, I would take it. Better safe than sorry. Have fun!
cb at sea Posted April 7, 2012 #8 Share Posted April 7, 2012 You will not need your marriage license, but you should book everything in the name on your DL....
LSUTigers2008 Posted April 8, 2012 #9 Share Posted April 8, 2012 I was in a similar situation. My passport is in my maiden name and my DL is in my married name, but I also have my maiden name on it. I called Carnival to see which one I need to make the reservation in and they told me to book it with whatever name is on my passport. I was concerned that they would make me take my passport off the ship at each port with me since my name on my dl and booking didn't match. That wasn't the case. I did bring my marriage certificate just in case they needed it if they did ask why my names didn't match on everything, but they never asked for it. ray98 Posted April 19, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 19, 2012 I have always presented ours with everything else but we also cruise on birth certificates. I don't know if it was required though.

So, does anybody know what they will accept as proof for newlyweds? They are 20 so they can't cruise alone unless legally married. They are getting married on the 18th and want to leave on the cruise for their honeymoon on the 19th! I know it's one of those exceptions that they can go alone if legally married, but will only have the certificate of marriage from the day before. cruisead Posted May 18, 2015 #12 Share Posted May 18, 2015 Newlyweds need to bring the marriage license along with birth certificates, a photo ID or passport.
Rare sparks1093 Posted May 18, 2015 #13 Share Posted May 18, 2015 NOw that you mention it - I wonder if a marriage license is needed for a passport We weren't required to provide it when we got DW's passport. OP, we brought it but they didn't ask to see it (they did ask if we had it after making it clear that our answer wouldn't change anything). I think the only time it is absolutely required is when the couple is under the age limit for cruising.

Rare sparks1093 Posted May 18, 2015 #15 Share Posted May 18, 2015 How are they going to be able to book it, if they are both under 21 and not yet married until the day before they sail? EM The cruise line will allow them to book but they will have to show proof at boarding that they meet the requirement. The PP should make sure that a signed copy of the marriage license is sufficient proof as it is unlikely that an actual marriage certificate would be issued in one day. shegolfs2 Posted May 18, 2015 #16 Share Posted May 18, 2015 FYI, I was told by Carnival this morning that they just need to provide a copy of the signed certificate (by the person who married them)...clearly they are not the first young couple to go on a honeymoon cruise
