squiddy Posted April 22, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 22, 2012 We are cruising on the eclipse in july on this cruise. We do not know whether to take the ships excursions on offer or to try and do them on your own ships excursions appear to be expensive. The ports we are visiting are reykjavik, akureyri, klaksvik, geiranger, molde, flam and bergen. Is the flam railway worth doing. Is the hoho bus in bergen worth doing. also do they take euros. In these places. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Rare LHT28 Posted April 22, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 22, 2012 I would go to the Northern Europe forum http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=192 Lots of information on the ports there You have several stops in Norway so i would take some NOK Bergen you can DIY ...short walk to city centre ,,Be sure to take the Floiban for a spectacular view
Rare Essiesmom Posted April 22, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 22, 2012 Flam, the railway is definitely worth doing. Capacity is limited, and if you choose to try to buy a ticket onsite, you might not get one. The Iceland ports, you definitely need a tour - whether you do it through the ship or try to arrange on your own, but don't think you can walk off the ship and hail a taxi for a good tour. In Reykjavik, you ship will dock in a commercial area, not downtown (much too big). EM
Andee Posted April 22, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 22, 2012 We loved the Flam RR--did it on our own by booking tickets online before the cruise. Bergen was easy to tour on our own--I complied a self-guided historical walking tour from guidebooks and websites. In Geiranger, we did a ship's excusrion to be able to take a bus tour up the mountain (it made several stops) and finish at the excellent museum. There are probably independent local tour operators who do the same thing for less money.
