How much servers make?

Recommended Posts

Honestly curious here.

People ask this all the time and I wonder why....do people sit around and question other workers salaries??? Do you all ponder how much your dentist reels in a year or the guy who picks up your trash????

Why are people so consumed with the salaries of others???

I think it is only natural for people to be curious about something that one isnt overly familiar with. People on here are passionate about cruising so I can understand the curiosity regarding all things having to do with it, although not really any of our business beyond what we want to tip or "pay" them. Also it helps being on an internet discussion board to ask this. Many wouldnt be sold bold or rude to ask in person....at least I hope not.

What's your income? What do you do and how much do you make?

I am so in agreement with you. It's really nobodies business what people make, and for people to be so superior as to think they have a right to know the servers wages, it just boggles the mind!!!

Do you ask your servers at restaurants at home what they make before you decide their tip??? It's crazy how people think they are entitled to this info!!!

You know....I am personally opposed to Dog racing...I have done volunteer work and donate to Hollydogs (adopt Greyhounds)

Therefore I never...ever....go to Mardi Gras casino (horrible dog track)...I don't go to events there, or hold events there, I don't go even if /when they offer free buffets....I don't don't participate in something that I feel is cruel and unjust

If you are truly concerned about the "workers"

why not just stay home and send the money you budgeted for your cruise to Ketut, Amad and all the rest of the gang you love so much??

I have yet to see someone say they just won't cruise anymore....they can't stand the thought of the crew in their little cabins, working so hard

See I can't stand the thought of these sweet dogs in cages, made to run, dogs that never play, never know love...so I don't go there

you might consider following thru on your ideals ???

I absolutely agree about the dogs, I think it might be the first time I've ever agreed with you

Yeah it never ceases to amaze me how many people are sooooo concerned about the "work conditions" of the crew yet they keep paying "the man" to keep them down!:D

I agree. It's also ironic that many threads get started over the 'plight' of the crew, but then when rates rise of auto tips get increased there is general pandamonium.

Also ironic: feeling bad because the workers are from the third world, but then complaining about not wanting to get off the ship in Belize or Jamaica because 'there are poor people and beggers all over the place'.

The workers on ships work there because the money is better than they can get in their home country, otherwise they wouldn't be there....no need to feel sorry for them.

If the people working aboard had better options, I'm sure they'd be doing it. Sure, it's a grind, from the American stand-point, but that's because we're spoiled rotten.

Honestly, though... someone from a third world country, with poor prospects, can get a higher than average paycheck (some of which is probably administered in cash that probably never sees the light of Uncle Sam) and help support their families back home, or better yet, recruit their families to come work aboard the ship as well.

Where is the tragedy, here? Is the tragedy that Americans don't want to do it for those prices?

Is the tragedy that cruise lines haven't figured out how to tap the REALLY destitute workers of the world so that we can save a few dollars on tipping them?

I'm sure your average person from North Korea or Sudan would be thrilled to work somewhere that food and shelter are provided every day - 3 meals a day, no less! - Wow, where do I sign up? Heck, they'd probably do it for free just to get away. They probably wouldn't make the best waitstaff in the world, and they hate Americans and capitalists on principle, but who knows, maybe they should give 'em a whirl at it sometime?

NCLA gave the Americans a whirl at it, after all. And the results haven't been too stellar.

I doubt Carnival is forcing people to cruise on their ships, but Carnival does make it clear that tipping is expected and provides guidelines for what each passenger should tip.

Carnival also makes it VERY clear that if your not getting good service then by all means remove your tip. People that tip for bad service are worse than the people who remove tips even if they got good service. People that say " oh they work so hard and deserve the tips even if they gave you bad service"have no clue. They took the job because in their country they in no way could find suckers to give them money by making them feel sorry for them. Naive some of you are

Hitting the like button. I cannot believe people will ask how much the ship personnel make. Do they like it when someone (like a stranger) ask what they make?

Thanks for posting this ... I was thinking the same thing.

I guess I just don't understand the need to know what these people make ... When I go grocery shopping, I don't ask the produce guy what he makes! And frankly, I'm not going to tell you what I make!

A favorite excused used by cheap people. My preference is to address service issues at the time of poor service. There is a chain of command. Why would anyone tolerate poor service unless they are cheap?

I have learned through the years not all cultures tip

Most that I have encountered from Canada do not tip at all

just my thoughts

I am Canadian and almost always tip more than 15%. I don't think you should generalize like that. I think there are good and bad tippers from all over. :o)

I started this thread to ask a simple question.

I am a first time cruiser.

This has really turned me off I must say.

Don't let the haters bother you - they just do it for sport. You asked a simple question out of innocent curiosity. People can and will twist things to satisfy their own warped agendas. I think you get a lot of bored people that just like to stir things up. They hide behind their screen names and try to cyber-bully people. Don't let them win.

I had a discussion with a room steward over the lack of an ashtray in my balcony cabin a couple of years back. 'No smoking' he said. I said "I guess I better head down to the hotel managers office then" He "I'll get you an ashtray, is there anything else I can do to make your cruise more pleasant?"

Problem immediately solved without any ranting or taking off of tips. He ended up being a fine steward.

Sargent Schultz is right.

Hugh in Dallas

P.S. I'll guarantee there are a lot more Americans going to Asia and Mexico for kidney transplants and other medical procedures then there are ship crewmembers getting one in Miami.

Honestly I recommend reporting folks who bully you for asking questions. The mods will have to get tired of dealing with the trouble makers.

Yep, it was about $2.80 last time I ran a restaurant, which was several years ago. But don't feel too sorry for servers: it all depends on the job you have and your level of skill. When I was 17 I walked out on satureday nights with a couple hundred bucks in my pocket, I had no problem with the hourly wage:)

I don't feel sorry for them either, hundreds worked for me over the years and the good ones made a very decent living. I don't feel sorry for the crew on a cruise ship either, and that was my only point. Folks up in arms about "slave wages" on the ships, when the wage for a US server is really no better since after taxes are taken out on their claimed tips, they pretty much get ZIP for an hourly wage.

Haters??? Hmmm....do you mean like people who wish bad things on other people??

As for the OP......they really did not ask about tips or what people tip

They asked about "what the servers make"

and my viewpoint...since this is an "opinion" type question...is that I personally don't go on a cruise with a burning interest in the behind the scenes stuff, just does NOT interest me.

I also have stated that I never really talked to anyone on a cruise in real life who was so obsessed with the "workers", their wallets, families, lives, lovers or whatever. ONLY on message boards

I did skim through Cruise Confidential but gave it away to a friend,

and didn't buy the sequel. Just not my thing. Then again I don't like watching "reality" shows about people's J=O=B's..whether it is Undercover Boss or the Pawnshop show or whatever
