Kristi5000 Posted May 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2012 I can't decide whether to add time to my Ipad cellular plan, or purchase an internet package onboard. The Ipad option is $30, and it would likely only work in port cities. Does anyone know the rate charged on Oasis to purchase an internet plan? Approximate cost for approximate # of minutes? Rare LittleMissMagic Posted May 17, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2012 The base rate is $.65 per minute, but you can also purchase an Internet package. $35 for 60 min $55 for 100 min $75 for 150 min $100 for 250 min $150 for 500 min
Cigar King Posted May 17, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2012 Your iPad cellular option will only work, with no additional charges, if your cellular company also serves that port. You can use the wireless in local cafes though. It works for us, and is very reasonable price wise.
Kristi5000 Posted May 17, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted May 17, 2012 I believe ATT serves all the Eastern ports, but thanks for the good advice.
Rare silentbob007 Posted May 17, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2012 I don believe iPad 3G plans include international roaming. You'd be able to use it in St. Thomas, but that's about it.
DrD Posted June 20, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2012 At&T (if that's your carrier) has some roaming plans that are reasonable, I used one in Italy. This ws for my phone though not ipad. What I don't know is if the roaming also includes using the ship's cellular service. Also I'm not sure if the ship's cellular is faster for internet than ship's wifi. Anyone? cb at sea Posted June 20, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 20, 2012 The roaming will NOT include the ship's service....in order to connect, you have to pay for a key (or whatever it's called...password, whatever) to unlock the ship's wi-fi.
Rare mking8288 Posted June 21, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 21, 2012 ... I'm not sure if the ship's cellular is faster for internet than ship's wifi. Anyone? Cellular on the ship and WiFi are the same, it is routed via ship's satellite connection uplink at same speed/bandwidth ... AT&T's global plan, I thought, covering roaming on the ship and only IF it's true, rates might be "lowered" by the MB charges vs. ship's per minute charge, as it can take up to 2 minutes to load/refresh a typical graphics-intensive webpage (tip: turn off sound & video/pix & run it text only, if possible - problems for Java & Flash scripted links) VZW has a global plan that cover roaming on cruise ships including data, pricey but better than internet/WiFi charges on the ship, metered by the MB - never used it so I'm not sure if it applies to both CDMA and GSM signals as my Android global smartphone is unlocked running custom ROM, and I use my own "foreign" Sim vs. their partner's Vodafone Sim.
