Cruising from Galveston - Questions

We will be cruising from Galveston in early 2013 on the Crown Princess and I have a few questions. The last time we were there we cruised on Royal Caribbean in 2004, so I know there probably have been some changes.

We will be flying from CA to Hobby on SWA coming in one day early. What would be a good way to go from Hobby to our hotel? (And probably back again.) We don't want to rent a car.

What are some good hotels for a one-night stay in Galveston? I would like one with a restaurant, or one close by. Also, a shuttle to the port would be good, but it's not necessary if there are lots of Taxi's available.

Also, could we fly home the same day we return? We usually fly the same day from FLL, but we are much closer to the airport.

Thanks for any assistance.

There are livery services that will take you from Hobby to Galveston and return. An alternative although pricey is to take a taxi.

There are many hotels and restaurants along the seawall which would allow you to walk to a nearby restaurant. They do have a bus that runs up and down the seawall. Taxis can be used as well. Most of the chain hotels are there such as Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriott etc. You can go to tripadvisor dot com and see ratings and comments on the different hotels and restaurants by travelers. I have stayed at the Hilton several times and enjoyed my stay.

Hobby is 42 miles from the port at Galveston and the highway can experience delays due to congestion and construction. So any flight after noon on Saturday would work.

For transfers from Hobby or IAH we've used Galvestonlimo They pick you up at the airport with their shuttles and return you to the airport after the cruise

Scheduled airport transfers to/from Galveston

Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds like a good option.

The Tremont and the Harbor House are good downtown hotels on the port side of the island. Many restaurants and shops within walking distance. On the seawall side, the Galvez is a famous older, but well maintained hotel, and the Hilton and San Luis Resort are nice. Plus all of the standard motels are available. Most of the hotels offer shuttles to the ships.

Thanks for the hotel suggestions. It's nice to hear from someone who "knows."
