fischymom Posted August 6, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 6, 2012 I have a pay period fall on the Wednesday of a Sun-Sun Caribbean cruise. I would like to use an ATM to get some extra spending cash for port days instead of having everything on the cc. What is the best option for this? Does ship have ATM? Wait till on land?? The ship does have an ATM, but I would not depend on it. They seem to be out of order fairly often. Most ports have ATM's readily available. fischymom Posted August 6, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Thanks! I figured that the ports did, they do want our money right :D I was worried that I would not be able to get extra cash. I do not remember if our last ship had an ATM, though I was sure it probibly did.

Clarea Posted August 6, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Another option is to go to the Casino on board and take out cash against your SeaPass account. This will cost you 3%, but it is an option if the ATM does not work out.
Host Faith Posted August 6, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 6, 2012 One by the Guest relations and One in the Casino :D Yup, that's where they are :). FYI, the one time I used the ATM, it was a $7.00 fee to get my cash. Just a heads up.
cb at sea Posted August 6, 2012 #7 Share Posted August 6, 2012 All the ships have ATMS....if all else fails, just use the credit card, and apply the cash that you would have taken from the ATM to your credit card account when you get home.! I would like to use an ATM to get some extra spending cash for port days instead of having everything on the cc. What is the best option for this? Does ship have ATM? Wait till on land?? Like others mentioned, the on ship ATM will charge you about 7$ for the convenience. Taking out against your SeaPass account in the Casino is 3% which could very well be a cheaper option. I would caution against using ATMs in port due to the potential for card skimmers.
setsail Posted August 6, 2012 #9 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Never had to use an ATM on a ship ,hate paying someone else to get our own money. We always carry TC's, no charge to get or cash.

Chrystal you beat me to it! The ships ATM does charge a hefty transaction fee and that is in addition to any fees your bank will also charge for an out of network ATM. bunker1706 Posted August 6, 2012 #12 Share Posted August 6, 2012 On our last cruise, we tried to get money from the ATM, but everytime it would error out due to the satellite. We tried it several times while out at sea and then again several times while in port. I wouldn't count on them working.
newbiecruiser09 Posted August 6, 2012 #13 Share Posted August 6, 2012 I would not use the ATM on board--$7 fee plus bank fees for using another's ATM? not worth it IMHO. I also would not use one in Port-too scared of skimmers (as well as more fees--hate fees!!) If you can, before you leave, take some cash out of your savings or checking accounts at home and replace it with your paycheck money when you return. IF not, I'd get cash from the casino (3% is probably less than the ATM fees) and pay the credit card when you get home.

Most ports have ATM's readily available. Your right on both accounts, If the ATM on the ship isn't working, I would probably get cash from the casino against my seapass card which in my case is tied to my credit card. Not based on any experience or fact, I would be suspicious of any ATM in a foreign port.

Galatz Posted August 6, 2012 #16 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Fees are always going to be very high, and what if you want something on Tuesday when the check hits Wednesday? I would suggest seeing if someone will lend you the cash, write them out a check before you go and just have them wait until Thursday to deposit. Probably the safest option
Clarea Posted August 6, 2012 #17 Share Posted August 6, 2012 My Capital One debit Mastercard still has no ATM fees and no foreign transaction fees. Any ATM fees charged outside of their network are reimbursed up to $30 / month.

In foreign ports just be sure to use the ATM's that are attached to banks and you will be fine. I've traveled to various places around the world and use ATM's all the time in foreign ports. Never had a problem and the exchange rates these ATM's give you is better than any money exchange place. Depending on where you are traveling to some ATM's in foreign ports even give you the option of withdrawing US cash or local currency.
Gil T. Azell Posted August 6, 2012 #19 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Chrystal you beat me to it! The ships ATM does charge a hefty transaction fee and that is in addition to any fees your bank will also charge for an out of network ATM. Fees depend on you own account with your bank. I can use ATM's anywhere in the world and not pay any fees as my plan cover out of network transactions. Each ATM that you use will let you know if there is a fee on their end before you complete the transaction. The ships ATM does have a $6 fee but many ATM's in foreign ports do not have such fees for their machines. However depending on your banking plan you may incur fees with your own institution. The issue is skimmers, which are used with some frequency in any 'tourist' area. Even those attached to banks can very easily have a skimmer attached. More info on exactly how sneaky these devices can be... http://krebsonsecurity.com/tag/atm-skimmer/ Yes but that's a problem everywhere not just foreign ports. It happens in North America also. If you are worried than you can put an ATM limit and daily spend limits on your account so your account can't be drained. You really have a greater chance it happening to you at home than during your travels as you use your card with greater frequency and more places in your home town and surrounding areas. sdear Posted August 7, 2012 #24 Share Posted August 7, 2012 Also, just make sure you let your bank or CC company know that you will be out of the country and what ports, so they can flag your account. Two stops and your card might get locked if you dont let them know ahead of time. Saves alot of hassle later when your card gets locked and you need it.
