midwestchick Posted August 9, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2012 We did purchase a beverage package, mainly because I know people who have cruised a lot and told us the drinks were expensive and added up to be a big expense....upwards of $12.00 per drink. I have no idea what the cost of drinks are on Azamara and I'm also aware we can bring alcohol on board but I'm not chancing that...it would be a clothing nightmare if something like that happened to break during baggage handling....especially wine.   What I'm wondering, if you have a beverage package, will they stock your refrigerator with beer, wine, etc.? There are times we just like to sit on the balcony alone and have a drink...especially at the end of a long day before we go to dinner.
Dr H Posted August 9, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2012 I suspect the answer is NO, but for practical reasons. Officially, each room comes with a "refrigerator". I measured the inside dimensions last cruise, don't remember where the measurements are, but suffice it to say, the thing is tiny/miniscule. You can get about 3, 12oz soda cans standing vertically, and another 2-3 cans above that, lying flat. Not only can you not fit a wine bottle in (I tried), you won't be able to fit a half wine bottle in (I tried that too). As for packing wine, honest, that is not a problem. Wrap the bottle with bubble wrap, any wine store can provide a cardboard shipping container to avoid jolts. Last trip, we stocked 2 full bottles of champagne, 2 half bottles of booze (I have this thing for 18 yo single malts...), and several half bottles of wine. If catastrophe were to occur inside your suitcase, well, Azamara won't charge for the use of their washing machines on Deck 7, soap included. Have a wonderful trip! Hi Midwestchick, I agree with Dr H, and believe the answer is no. From what I was told, Cabin attendants must account for the product. When I was onboard Journey last year, I was told they could not place Diet Coke in my refigerator without a charge. No biggie, as I asked for a couple of cans at Mosaic Cafe, and brought them to my cabin. This may be an item to determine once onboard. I hope this helps ! BillC Posted August 9, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 9, 2012 Andy: Our experience is totally different from yours. When we first meet our attendant we ask him / her to remove everything except for Diet Coke, or Coke Zero from our refrigerator. We've never had a problem with this request, including filling the refrigerator back up each day. On our last cruise they put a whole case of sodas in our room the second day. We also ask that they fill a wine bucket each afternoon and put in the wine bottle that we have left out to be chilled. In most ports you can buy wine and spirits in, or close to the cruise terminal. We also always bring two reusable liquor / wine carriers in our suitcases, sometimes empty since we may buy something during the cruise that we want to bring home. They are available in many travel catalogs. Cheers!
midwestchick Posted August 9, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted August 9, 2012 Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I always bring liquor home from a vacation in a bubble wrap type container I bought at a winery and nothing has ever broken...I still won't chance taking things and having clothing ruined...wine stains can be tough to remove. Glad to hear they accomodated you !
excitedofharpenden Posted August 9, 2012 #7 Share Posted August 9, 2012 I've never had a problem with removal of refrigerator bar items either. I have on occasion just taken them out and put them under the dresser and put them back at the end of the cruise, under advice to the cabin attendant/butler. I'm not sure if I am reading the original post right. Are you asking whether you can have alcohol purchased as part of the drinks package stored in your refrigerator? If so then the answer is no. The drinks package is for purchasing alcohol at the bars, subject of course to it being bought one at a time for the package owner. To be honest and from experience I don't find the package would be worth it for me, especially with the inclusive wine with meals. Just an extra bit of information. Azamara does not add a gratuity to drinks purchased, so if a Martini is quoted on the menu at say $11 that is what you'll pay rather than $11 plus a 15% gratuity. Doesn't sound a big deal, but it adds up. Phil

While my experience was related to Soft drinks (Dr H suggested that Soft Drinks should be ok), I'm fairly certain that if you purchase an alcohol package, they will not stock your Cabin refigerator with Beers and such. Perhaps Bill Leiber will clarify for us.
corpkid Posted August 9, 2012 #9 Share Posted August 9, 2012 Not to hijack the OP's thread, but I also have a question regarding the drinks package.... Can it be purchased on a day-to-day basis? We have several days where we'll be in port almost all day and I probably would not elect the package on those days. Thanks! Dominic

Dominic Good question...I didn't think about that and I believe there are only 2 days that involve being away from the ship most of the day. As one OP said...if a Martini is $11.00, and you have a few, then it's worth it to me. We did the mid package and the wine with lunch and dinner is not something that would benefit me...I cannot drink wine...after a few sips, I develop a migraine type headache so I avoid it completely. laurieb Posted August 10, 2012 #11 Share Posted August 10, 2012 I'm pretty sure that the website says the packages are available for purchase for the first 2 days of the cruise and that you must purchase for the duration
midwestchick Posted August 10, 2012 Author #12 Share Posted August 10, 2012 I'm pretty sure that the website says the packages are available for purchase for the first 2 days of the cruise and that you must purchase for the duration Now that you mentioned it, I believe that is correct. When I mentioned this to people I know that cruise, they thought it was a good deal...even the days you're on excursions.
corpkid Posted August 10, 2012 #13 Share Posted August 10, 2012 Thanks! After taking a closer look, it does say it needs to be purchased on the first two days. We will still purchase it as we feel it is worth it as well but was curious. :) Thanks!

Like all the onboard staff nothing is to much trouble.

Bloodaxe Posted August 10, 2012 #16 Share Posted August 10, 2012 Does that mean they will actually stock it with beer if you ask? No. I did say soft drinks, sodas etc, also bottled water is always left in the stateroom & replenished daily

henrytf Posted August 13, 2012 #18 Share Posted August 13, 2012 Hi, have just returned from the Quest - will post a full review later. We had no problem with changing any of the soft drinks in the cabin fridge just asked our steward, left the emptys on the floor by the bin & he replaced the next day. Also 2 bottles of water left each day & the ice bucket filled twice a day. We felt the drinks package was not for us - we probably had a couple of beers each most days, plus daily cocktail's $6 - most beers were from $5.50 as were the beers in the cabin fridge. At $29 a day each for the low price package - we would probably have been hammered! most of the time. But - watch out for happy hour 5.30 - 7.0pm Pool bar (not sure if it applys to other bars) all drinks are discounted !! The meal time wine was never a problem, we probably spent about $300 over the 12 days on drinks, the beer is expensive compared to UK prices - but mostly was no more than shore front bars. Hope this helps Henry
Rare uktog Posted August 13, 2012 #19 Share Posted August 13, 2012 I have never found the Azamara beverage packages attractive. If we take spirits on board, we carry them as hand luggage (carry on) usually having bought the drink at the Airport duty free. Alternatively in some ports there are duty free shops at the port and we go back ashore after checking in if we need to get any spirits. As we travel mainly in suites, we actually get 2 litres of spirits anyway so this is another reason we would only rarely need to get drink. Remember you can also bring drink on board at every port as well. So all in all, I would find it very hard to get the maths of a beverage package to stack up

laurieb Posted August 13, 2012 #21 Share Posted August 13, 2012 The price doesn't seem unreasonable if you aren't going to be drinking wine.

Strange....why would that not be included? It has been in any land resort we've stayed at. Hopefully, Bill Leiber can chime in about this.
laurieb Posted August 14, 2012 #23 Share Posted August 14, 2012 Perhaps because anybody could drink it if you decided to give it to someone else; they can't control it from your room like they can from the bars where you have to personally order and show them your card
