Just off the Gem

Just got home from the week long Bahama cruise on the Gem. All in all, a great experience. Only snag we had was my daughter cutting her feet on glass in the kids pool and one lounge. Handled well by the staff and Ken (the Cruise Director) treated us to La Cucina (the specialty Italian restaurant).

Overall, the food was good (amazing steaks), the staff friendly, and they kept my kids occupied when we decided it was time for a break. We had an inside room which posed a space issue. But we made due. My family members' balcony cabin was not all that much bigger, so it wouldn't have mattered.

Entertainment was decent. The Gem Singers and Dancers were especially enjoyable.

The one main complaint was that NCL seems to nickel and dime you for every little thing. $5 for a pizza to be delivered to your room, but free room service from 5am to midnight. Charged for a character breakfast that wasn't even good, as well as other things.

As for the Nickelodeon aspect, there could have been more interaction around the ship with the characters. The limited meet and greets were mediocre at best.

I guess that would be 100 nickels and 50 dimes then.

I thought the food in Teppanyaki was very good, the food in Moderno was pretty good, but he food in the buffet and the regular dining venues left a little to be desired. Not bad, but I would say just average or a little below. My last cruise on NCL was in 2009 on the Pearl to Alaska, and I thought the food went downhill a bit since then.

We had a good time, enjoyed the ports and the sea days. Ship was very clean, and room was well kept. Entertainment was average. The machines in the casino seemed very tight. The crap tables were barely open due to lack of interest, and other than the last day, they couldn't get enough players to play Hold Em.

I hate the term nickle-and-dime. Instead, I think of them as opportunities to add onto my base cruise fare. I'd rather pay a cheaper base fare and decide what else I want to spend on, rather than have things included I don't want or care about. For example, I wouldn't want a character breakfast at all, so I wouldn't pay for that. If you want it included, try Disney cruise line and be prepared to pay a hefty premium for those things included. I feel the pizza delivery charge may be more of a deterrent for people who would just order a bunch of pizzas because they are free and waste food. I am annoyed a bit with the late-night room service surcharge, but normally just visit Blue Lagoon instead.

Glad you had an overall good experience, but your daughter cutting her foot twice on glass sounds dangerous!
