Massnatives Posted September 15, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2012 Has anyone done this trip? We will be on Celebrity in December. Wondering about the boat trip, the boat itself - I heard it's fast, windy and sunny. Any thoughts? Thanks.
stressedmomof3 Posted September 16, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2012 I actually posted a review of our cruise here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1675883 if you scroll down to the bottom I posted about Altun Ha and River Wallace. The boat ride was a bit choppy for us only when it went fast-hth. I can't tell you much about how it is in December-but I am sure it will be a nice trip. Be sure to wear a hat as most of the boats do not have a top on them and the ones we saw that do- it only covers the driver and a few people who sat around him. Massnatives Posted September 30, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted September 30, 2012 Thank you 'mom of 3' - I'm still torn. Bumpy bus? Bumpy, hard riding boat? Rushed lunch? My husband is 74 - good health and stamina - but wondering if this is for us. Thanks for your response.
stressedmomof3 Posted October 1, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 1, 2012 If not going in the summer- I would say it should be not a problem unless you or the hubby has a bad back. There is only one place where you have the option to climb a staircase up one of the ruins, ( if you choose not to no problem- more time to walk around and take pictures) but the Altun Ha itself is not really big at all.The bus ride is bumpy-but again- not too much an issue unless you have a bad back. There were quite a few seasoned cruisers on our excursion when we went in July and most of what I heard from them was it was a great excursion, long and hot, but a once in a lifetime opportunity that they enjoyed . If you decide to go- be sure to bring water bottles and maybe some crackers to snack on if needed. They say not to bring food off of the boats- but was told if they are prepackaged like the childrens' cheez its snack for instance, it is fine.Oh and bring a hat-definately don't want sunburn ontop of your head from the boat ride;) If visiting the ruins interests you and you both are in good health and can stay out the day for an excursion- I would say go for it. A lot of the really smaller ruins aren't really worth the $ you pay to go see them and the much larger ones like Uxmal or Chichen Itza are kinda spread out and a lot more walking/climbing. Altun Ha is really that just right medium size to let you know if you really enjoy it and want to try for a bigger site next time or if you are satisfied with what you just visited as a new experience. hope this helps!
