Swimming in Nassau

Can anyone tell me is there any seimming/snorkeling in Nassau WITHOUT having to take an excursion. Thanks!

there is not any significant snorkeling from shore in Nassau due to depleted and overused reef systems.

SHeraton has a small rocky reef with a variety of fish, but no coral heads or colorful fans.

Access fee for the sheraton is $25pp. Includes beach, pools, and non-motorized water toys (kayaks, trikes).. there is also a bar/grill, hotel amenities, restrooms and lifeguards.

On Paradise Island, there an outcropping of rocks on Cabbage Beach about a mile and a half east of the entrance. BUt this can be iffy, due to tides and weather. It can sometimes be too rough to safely swim in this area.

Along most of the rest of the beaches, you'll find patches of dead coral or rock coral, but mostly sandy bottom and no sealife.

The few reef that still exist near shore are about 1/2 - 1 mile off shore.. not recommended for beach snorkeling. Please keep in mind that snorkeling in unmarked waters are dangerous, as jetski's and boaters can't see you in the water.
