space saver bags

Has anyone ever used the spacesaver bags? I'm tempted to by them but wouldn't the vacuum make the bags so compact that the clothes would be terribly wrinkled? I'm trying to justify buying them. I mean, you would have the same amount to take home without the benefit of the vacuumed bag, right?

Yes, they do wrinkle your clothes (unless there's a secret I haven't learned yet). But I do bring a few space bags for the trip home and pack all my laundry in them. It doesn't matter then if the clothes get wrinkled, and it makes a little more room for purchases.

With the space saver bags, you are supposed to be able to fit more clothes in. However, won't they weigh the same? And if you are able to fit more in a suitcase, there is a good chance that your suitcase will be overweight.
The airlines are getting tough on overweight luggage and some charge hefty overweight fees.

There is a type you can buy that you roll to squeeze the air out, no vacuum necessary. I have bought some from Target, for about $9 for 4 bags. I think QVC or HSN has them, as well as TravelSmith and Magellans, a little pricier, maybe better quality.

I only use the bags for items I don't mind getting wrinkled, like socks, underwear, swimsuits, pajamas. I also use them for sweatshirts and jackets.
The poster is right about the extra weight issue you may have using the space bags, be careful so you don't wind up rearranging luggage at the airline gate.

luvronijean..... I use the 2 gallon baggies (and larger) that can be purchased in the grocery store/walmart, etc.... I use them for t-shirts, raincoats, underwear, socks, etc.... they are awesome!

They do the job...and are very little $ compared to the actual space saver bags. Also, I use them during the cruise for storing dirty underwear, etc... so as to not stink up the rest of the suitcase.

My children love to "get all of the air out!".

Just something to think about.

I have used the space saver bags in the past, and yes, things still weigh the same. So you can pack more in but you're gonna pay for it. And you have to put the clothes in the bags and then roll the bag with clothes in it to get the air out. Then if you try to unroll the bag to stack nicely in your suitcase some air might creep back in. But if you put the half-rolled bag of clothes in the suitcase it takes up a lot of room. And yes, the clothes will be a little wrinkled.

For my upcoming cruise I invested in packing cubes that you roll your clothes in. They are little mesh zippered cubes in all sizes you roll whatever in and then stack in your suitcase. It makes it very organized and easier for the TSA to rummage through your suitcase. They are a little pricey but I've been buying them over time and on sale and they will be good for several years.

Eaglecreek makes some that I use all the time. these are the roll kind, where air is rolled out. Remember these are "space savers" designed to save space. I use them for underwear and other garments that I don't worry about wrinkling. They are very useful and save tons of space, allowing you to pack in a smaller bag. Plus they are great for dirty clothes, where wrinkling is not a problem.

A suggestion: pack one of the large ones empty, and use it for dirty clothes. This will give you room for all those t-shirts and trinkets you pick up in port.

I used the space saver and the 2 gallon bags. We were able to fit all of our clothes for a 7day cruise in one suitecase. When weighed at the airport it came to 48lbs. This was also including other things besides clothes for the trip. The only thing I found the 2 gallon bags useful for was shampoo and other bottles to keep organized. They didn't work like the space savers. Yes there were wrinkles but I brought Downey Wrinkle release what an amazing product. I should include that our evening wear was in a different bag. I am a big over packer!

We pack everything but our formal wear in the 2.5 gallon Hefty bags and love them. It saves room in the suitcases and keeps everything very organized. Also, if they inspect your suitcase at the airport they do not need to touch your clothes and it is much easier for them to put everything back. It took a little practice but now I can pack with no wrinkles at all. I do not roll the bags - I just sit on them while I zip them closed to get the air out. As far as weight goes we just use smaller suitcases now. I also never have to worry about anything leaking on our clothes. They dropped a coworkers suitcase in the ocean while taking it off the ship - she sure wished that she had known about the ziplock bags! I hope this helps!
