Who flies Business Class???

I just got an email from a TA regarding flights to Europe. They are really good deals -- $1700 return for cattle class and $6700 for Business Class. That means that for the two of us, Business Class return to London would cost us a total of $10,000 extra!!:eek:

My wife doesn't like flying non-stop to Europe anymore - neither do I for that matter - so, do we fly Business Class (for the added comfort etc) or do we have a week long stopover both ways in Singapore staying in Raffles??? :D Hmmm - difficult choice!!:p

Barry - maybe fly cattle class and have two nights in Singapore - but somewhere less expensive than Raffles. That will leave some change for a few beers for you and a mocktail for Christine. :)

Noo - the quest is to find something to do with the $10,000 that we would save by NOT flying Business class. It would have to be at least a week both ways - and would also have to be at least in Raffles !! :D --although I could also enjoy a week or two in the new Marina Bay Casino hotel

My wife and I were lucky enough to be put in business class from dubai to perth recently due to my wifes seat in cattle class being broken.

We really enjoyed the pampering that goes with it food drinks etc. etc and yes we did sleep unlike other times,Thankyou Emirates.

Regards Frank.

I hate flying...flying buses I call them...yuk. However I only fly business class if I have the points available.. Take the stopover everytime or try to find a cruise that gets you at least part of the way home...lots of cruises end in Singapore which is only a short hop or a cheap flight on Scoot..to home.

The only good thing about a plane is when its taking me to a cruise ship!

I am still "young" enough to fly cattle class and have always managed somehow to tuck my long legs up under my chin and not be too uncomfortable....:D

I have used Air Points to upgrade to Business on a couple of flights but unfortunately I am with Qantas and that is such a hassle to arrange.

My current health necessitates a Business Class flight as that's the only way I could fly theses days.

I have also noticed that several friends , of advanced years, who have decided to take a cruise have said to heck with the expense...its Business class or we don't go.

There are no travel agencies in the graveyard.

People will make their own choices about where to spend their money. We fly business class about half the time when travelling overseas and premium economy the other half. For us, part of the holiday is in the travelling. We do look around carefully to check which fares are the best and try to pick up sale fares. Before someone comes back and says, "It's OK for the rich" (which I have seen here before), we are not. We choose to spend our money on holidays (including the flights) and often a suite on a ship or good hotels. We have ordinary cars and do not live in a large house. That's our choice.

You were saying recently that one of your friends is flying BC.

You mean me? I flew to UK and back using points so did go BC and FC..blew lots of points. But don't usually. Booked economy to Hawaii thats 10 hours and thats about the limit of my endurance in cattle class.

I think The_Big_M meant Bazzaw. He said he farewelled some friends who went to the UK business class.

Like you, the longer the flight the less likely it is that we will fly economy. Premium is quite a good compromise (on QF anyway, I have not travelled on BA for some years and it was not good). We use points to upgrade from Premium where possible.

Yes -- cancer patient. There comes a time when money becomes a minor consideration :( She had to cancel a trip to visit family in UK when she was diagnosed - now 2 years later, having beaten off the BigC , she is damaged but wanted to complete the trip.

If I had the money I would, but $10,000 extra for a couple, OZ to Europe, business over economy? No way Jose.

I only paid $10,000 for the two of us this year to cruise on Arcadia, 49 days, Sydney to Southampton via Asia/Africa in an oceanview cabin. (2 for 1 deal, heh, heh.)

We have been upgraded to business class twice in probably 50 international flights. Both from Auckland to Sydney, a mere 3.5 hours, once on Qantas, because it was our lucky day, the flight was overbooked. The other time last May, on Air NZ, because there was some sort of liquid flowing from the overhead locker onto my head. The nice Air Purser took us straight down to the pointy end - Business-First they call it on the Boeing 767's.

Table cloths for brekkie and all on Air NZ in Business/First.

Barry have a look at firstclass.com they have some really good deals for business class at the moment, I know what you mean about the flight we flew Emirates cattle class from Melbourne to

Manchester and I said never again we either bite the bullet and try for cheap premium economey or business or a 3 day stop over each way.

I just did Sydney to Orlando via Los Angeles and Memphis in one hit. Took 28 hours home door to hotel door. I used frequent flyer points and did it in business class. Glad I did otherwise there would have been dead people in my wake.....and I'm sure they're grateful for that :p

Coming home from New York direct was a lot more pleasant....in business class :p.

Viva la frequent flyer points :D Running out though  And no, I would not PAY the ridiculous amount they ask for it.

Stay on the club floor of the Ritz Carlton Singapore for 3 nights. Great club floor. Great hotel. Great rooms - get the room with the big octagonal window that sits next to the bath! :D

Then with the rest of the money get a really nice London hotel that is central. One of the elegant town house ones that oozes tasteful English decadence!

That's a very good reason, which I don't have. That's why I'm always (unless upgraded) down the back of the bus.

If it came down to it and time wasn't an issue, I'd probably go with extending the holiday for the same money, as you get 'more holiday' from it that way.

The only way I would do it is using frequent flier miles.

Hmmm -- I'm afraid that many have taken my question far too seriously :). The question was purely rhetorical - and meant to start a conversation as to the relative merits of paying an additional $10,000 ( above the cost of cattle class) to enjoy the 24 hour approx comforts offered by Flying Business Class to Europe - or to spend that money on another experience. :)

We have enjoyed the experience of flying Business to Europe with Qantas -- an upgrade, of course. It was WONDERFUL -- but at the end of the day you are still spending 24 hours in a metal tube hurtling though almost outer space. For me, if I had to spend that additional $10,000 to ensure a comfortable journey to Europe, I am certain I would choose the week at Raffles in Singapore (each way) -- it makes so much more sense to me

The cost of business class flights seem to reduce dramatically if you start your flight out of Australia. Weird I know but this is our experience for next years trip. We are flying economy with SQ to Singapore which is a 6 hour flight landing around 5pm. Very doable. Next day we are flying Business class to Dubai with Emirates, 4 night stopover, then Bus class Dubai to Istanbul, then cruising to Venice, so returning Venice -Dubai-Singapore all with Emirates Bus Class. Then with frequent flyer points, bus class Qantas Singapore to Adelaide. Total cost for all flights for 2 people was $7000. Yet if we flew Business Class just the sector Adl to Dubai direct the flights are way more, just for this sector. Makes no sense.

Just the high prices due to lack of competition and our remoteness that covers flights generally (not just BC) and other things too.

When I saw the title of this thread my immediate thought was, "Who flies Business Class? The same people who book Suites on ships!"

Yes - that is a good point. As much as it would be VERY desirable, we just can't do it :o:o. After a lifetime of quiet frugality, we just cannot go to those extremes ( suites on cruiseships and/or Business Class in he air). We could financially if we chose to -- but simply can't psychologically.
