kitty9 Posted January 28, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Just as an FYI, there is an outbreak of Noro on the ship. We've gotten announcements from the Captain and letters in our cabins about the outbreak. While we're not at a Code Red yet, if the number of passengers getting sick increases, I would expect to see this. Right now, the numbers are increasing quite a bit since Saturday. The medical center is doing land office business. I was in the elevator with a couple who were just quarantined and they said there were 23 others waiting in the center. What's interesting is, when they quarantine you, you are escorted to your cabin by a crew member so that they know you're actually going back to your cabin. To those on the Feb 1 cruise, you might prepare yourself for delayed embarkation if they have to do a complete cleaning of the ship.

jackdiamond Posted January 28, 2013 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Thanks for the heads up, there is an unusually potent version of noro going around the US right now, it is everywhere. As a matter of fact, there was a segment related to this issue on Sunday House Call yesterday. The admonitions were, inter alia, the same as in prior outbreaks: hand washing, use of clorox wipes, crowd avoidance, do not touch your face with your fingers, and do not shake hands. cpl100 Posted January 28, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2013 I know I read a thread a couple months ago but cannot find it now. In it people were posting what they brought on ship in case they started to feel ill during a Noro outbreak. It seemed like people brought items they felt would help them avoid it and also items to help deal with the symptoms/illness should they need it. Does anyone remember that thread or know where it is? Or possibly have their own list of such precautions? Thanks.
rebeccalouiseagain Posted January 28, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 28, 2013 First of all- if you suspect that you have norovirus- they ask you not to go to the medical facility. They ask you to phone down there. I was on Serenade of the Seas and had stomach ache. I drank a coke and then I was ill in the middle of the night- twice vomiting. In the morning I wasn't vomiting but felt weak and tired. I called the ship doctor- like it says in the daily newsletter. A nurse called me and said to rest. I was not "quarantined" per se. I didn't leave my room for 24 hours because I wanted to make sure I was not contagious. I was fine the next day. The nurse called me the following day to see how I was doing. In my case- it may have been motion sickness since it was short lived but they don't want you contaminating the medical center if at all possible. So if you are ill- call the medical center in the AM. They will ask you what your symptoms are.
dobes3kh Posted January 28, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 28, 2013 We were on the Constellation in Nov 2012 and the previous 2 or 3 cruises (that I'm aware of) had a Noro outbreak. We took the necessary precautions and brought specific hand foam with us and we were okay. The crew were constantly sanitizing but even still, we took precautions! Ex....wiping down entire cabin straight away--I know it won't kill EVERYTHING but it helps (plus there are other 'things' besides Noro....) washing our hands after handling the menus, actually washing our hands after EVERYTHING! I know that doesn't help with anything airborne etc. but we did everything we could to prevent contracting the virus and we were healthy! P.S. Our ship was delayed as well and even though we didn't board until about 2:30pm, it was okay! Missed the craziness at the buffet!
Gig103 Posted January 28, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 28, 2013 One more (albeit unlikely and lame) reason to get a balcony cabin; you can get some sea air if you're quarantined!
dobes3kh Posted January 28, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 28, 2013 One more (albeit unlikely and lame) reason to get a balcony cabin; you can get some sea air if you're quarantined! It's true! We've never been quarantined but on the Eclipse last year there was a rocky day and the balcony was a life saver! Being able to breathe the outside air and just sit and relax while focused towards the horizon got us through.
Kathie44 Posted January 28, 2013 #10 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Yikes! Good friends of mine are doing the Feb. 1 cruise. I just called and left a message to warn them. Hope everything clears up by then.
Hollywood Traveler Posted January 28, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Darcie: Thanks for the info. I'm beginning to think I'm really jinxed. I'm on the Feb. 1 sailing. And on three out of five other cruises I've been on we had noro. Ugh! Larry
jackdiamond Posted January 28, 2013 #12 Share Posted January 28, 2013 The medical folks are suggesting that this outbreak of noro will be around for quite awhile. If we were cruising during the next two or three months we would definitely wear surgical masks when in a crowded environment.

And on three out of five other cruises I've been on we had noro. Ugh! Larry Larry, please post your future itineraries so we can plan accordingly :D. I was on a cruise right after a code red. I did everything imaginable to avoid catching it, to no avail. I ended up quarantined for four days! But, as far as I am concerned, people get sick. I just had the bad luck to have it happen to me on a ship. In the long run, my life is pretty darned good if I am able to cruise a couple times a year, so it didn't bother me too much. The worse part was having to watch the same TV shows over and over. Would you believe that Barney bought that car from the sweet little old lady 14 times! You'd a thunk he'd have smelled a rat. Ship Happens OOOEEE :D:D Bob and Phyl PS, apparently those of us who caught it did the responsible thing, as by the second week the noro was all but eliminated. Plus you need the rail to hang over to vomit. :D On a more serious side, if you're quarantined what do the other people in your cabin do if they aren't sick? How do they avoid getting it from you? .
JahHaus Posted January 29, 2013 #15 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Curious...if there's an outbreak and I'm quarentined for awhile, do I get a rebate on my drink package? Here's hoping I never find out!

d4m Posted January 29, 2013 #17 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Was on tv tonight that there are 12,000,000 in just the US with the virus. Seems a bit tough to avoid it, especially in a confined area.

Seems a bit tough to avoid it, especially in a confined area. Sadly, you are correct. The best you can do is to follow all of the admonitions, and utilize surgical masks when you are in an area with a lot of people. I suppose that this may be one advantage to dinner and breakfast in Blu, since there are fewer folks who might infect you.
Whitechapel girl Posted January 29, 2013 #19 Share Posted January 29, 2013 I'm sorry but I Don't go on holiday to wear a surgical mask. We are on 15 march sailing and hope by then it will be under control. Do celebrity offer options to switch ships if this continues? I' 've saved for a year for this trip so will be so disappointed if this is still on-board.

Try not to worry and spoil the anticipation for your long awaited cruise.Unfortunately the Noro virus is rife everywhere, but on a ship, in close quarters so to speak, more attention grabbing. The best advice (you will read it on CC often!) is wash your hands as often as is possible, try to avoid handrails etc, try hard not to touch your mouth with your hands and don't shake hands even if it feels rude! Others I am positive will chip in with more tips. You will have an amazing cruise I'm sure:) By the way, I love your screen name, I worked at the Royal London Hospital back in the day;) Sue
Rare uktog Posted January 29, 2013 #21 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Most surgical masks are not designed to be worn for longer periods of time. Saw an article last week that they can do more harm than good especially if worn outside a sealed in environment. Something about germs incubated better around the mask Everyone is being very cautious onboard, if you are overly concerned, please extend your caution to your flight to the cruise as many believe onboard a plane is more risky than onboard a ship

Grumpy100 Posted January 29, 2013 #23 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Two years ago we were on the Crown Princess for a 12 day cruise of the British Isles. There was 8 of us altogether and 5 out of eight got the norovirus. My husband got it and we were in an inside cabin and only missed one port getting off because he got over it quickly. I ended up not getting it. I was super proactive in washing my hands and not touching anything in our cabin without a towel or tissue and lucked out and did not get it. We took care of it ourselves and did not report it because he got it the second day and we did not know of the outbreak. Only one out of the 5 reported it and he was confined to the cabin for 24 hrs. and then got over it. You never know.
blythe Posted January 29, 2013 #24 Share Posted January 29, 2013 If, as one poster has mentioned, Friday's embarkation of the Equinox is delayed, what method does Celebrity use to notify those who are one their way to the ship? Do they put anything on their website or do you just show up at the pier and find out you can't board until later? I have no problem coming to the pier later in the afternoon if I know in advance. I was on Solstice last season when we had a delayed boarding. Celebrity will send out an email or possibly call you. Also at the pier on big signs they had a notice telling passengers on the Solstice they should leave and come back later because of the delayed boarding, I think it said around 2 pm. Finally, they were passing out letters in line explaining what was going on. It was kind of a mess but just try and stay positive. I'm on the Friday sailing as well though so lets hope for the best!
