banshee72 Posted February 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2013 Dont plan on doing excursions at either of these ports. Is the pier withon walking distance to town/shopping/restaurants? Only in Puerto Rico until 2:00, which I think is a litlte odd, but so be it.

banshee72 Posted February 4, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted February 4, 2013 So....NOTHING close to the pier in St. Martin? No shopping? No town? No beach? Seems odd that there isnt something by the pier....
megr1125 Posted February 4, 2013 #4 Share Posted February 4, 2013 In St Maarten there are several shops near the pier...also, you can hop the water taxi into town....i think it's 6 bucks all day (give or take a couple bucks)..and takes maybe 10 minutes or so...you can get to the beach there, several vendors renting chairs, etc... cruzeluver Posted February 4, 2013 #5 Share Posted February 4, 2013 In Sta Maarten there are some shops right at the pier, but the bulk of the action (shopping and restaurants) and the closest beach are either a 15 minute walk or 5 minutes water taxi ride away, not far at all. JBert Posted February 4, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2013 So....NOTHING close to the pier in St. Martin? No shopping? No town? No beach? Seems odd that there isnt something by the pier.... Check out the Ports of Call sections too, there's a ton of info. In San Juan, it's a nice area to walk around. Places to eat, shopping, sight seeing. It really is a beautiful city. Yes, you have a short time there but you can do quite a bit in the limited time. St. Maarten has a shopping and food area in walking distance from the pier. If you are interested in doing more, Maho beach is a fun stop. There's plenty to do - it's up to you on what you want do do exactly!
sr4mjc Posted February 4, 2013 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2013 We always walk from the pier in St. Maarten, there is a sidewalk. But there is also a water taxi if you don't want to walk. I love the Belgian chocolate shop!

St. Maarten does have a little mini shopping area right near the pier on the way to get the water taxi. You can walk to town .... just follow along the water line. Rare nbsjcruiser Posted February 4, 2013 #9 Share Posted February 4, 2013 Puerto Rico yes.St. Martin no. In St Maarten take the water taxi right at the pier and it will drop you down town right at the beach. Great way to spend the day!
Capt_BJ Posted February 4, 2013 #10 Share Posted February 4, 2013 do these help? first is San Juan ... the line runs thru old San Juan ... northeast of the piers and all the way to the Morro Fort ... 1 mile (all up hill!) next is St Martin or Sint Maarten which is where you'll actually dock. The line here shows the straight line distance from the piers to the 'city dock' that a water taxi will take you to; it drops you in the middle of town. Or you can walk around ..... being a math major at one time I know that the difference is not significant in this case and frankly when on a cruise a nice walk is a good idea IMO! You will NOT pass thru any "undesirable areas" on the walk from the town to the piers . . .
Donder1 Posted February 4, 2013 #11 Share Posted February 4, 2013 Unless you have a disability or really find walking for more than 15 min. too much, you will be fine DIY. Both of these ports have sights and shopping within easy walking distance.
