Lucky Irish Posted April 4, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 4, 2004 We just got home from our cruise and did the day sail with the Winifred. We also had another family who sailed with us on the Alaunt. BOTH are a great treat. Sharon the Capt. of the Winifred is darling! she took such wonderful care of us as did her first mate Tommy ~ my girls (18) loved him! He took us and the friends from the Alaunt snorkling and OMG it was wonderful. We swam with sea turtles, sting rays and saw the most wonderful underwater creatures ever! I would SO recommed the day sail with the Winifred. we paid cash so I think we paid 110.00 per person. The only problem I had and it really wasn't a problem was on tipping. I didn't bring enough. Sharon recommeded tipping Tommy 15% ~ which for 5 would have been a little over 100.00, but I didn't have enough. Also, I didn't know what to tip Sharon. I'm always so unclear about how to tip an owner ~ the total cost for the 5 of us came to 650.00. I think it was well worth it. Enjoy, Lucky
Desertbelle Posted April 4, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 4, 2004 Good question....tipping an owner is wierd...and I thought it was generally not done. I wouldn't have a problem giving her 1st mate a tip of $15 a person, especially if he really went all out. Would her tip be more or less? Anyone else have any input on this?? We will be sailing the Winifred in November and I would hate to insult her either way. Glad you brought it up. Margie Celebrating Our Parents 60th Anniversary - Legend of the Seas to Mexico 9/5/04!! sunsi Posted April 7, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 7, 2004 Yes, tipping the crew is necessary. They work hard all day and make a minimal daily wage, so the tips are a big part of their income. I always tip the crew 15% or more.
Desertbelle Posted April 7, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 7, 2004 Tipping the crew wasn't in question....it's whether or not to tip the Captain, who in this case is also the owner of the boat. At close to $800 a day, she is making a good living....does she need tipping too? Margie Celebrating Our Parents 60th Anniversary - Legend of the Seas to Mexico 9/5/04!! Starz723 Posted April 9, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 9, 2004 Im booking the Winifred for my july cruise. Do I tip the Captain??? Geez, I never thought of that. Last time I went on a day sail it was just the Capt..He had no mates, he did everything. We didnt tip, either did the other couple. I guess like already mentioned, they are getting the big bucks..the mates are making much less. Anyone elses suggestion? Marge Starz723
geejaymel Posted April 10, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 10, 2004 We just tipped the first mate. One of the men on the sail asked the captain if there was a tip jar. (I thought that was a rather strange question.) Anyway, she said, "No, just give it to Tommy." Hopefully we did right. I think we gave him $40 for DH and me. Desertbelle Posted April 10, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 10, 2004 Thanks geejay....the more I thought about it the clearer it came to me that we should only tip the 1st mate. $20 a person seems more than fair. lmmn Posted April 18, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 18, 2004 I'm not sure about the etiquette. We tipped first mate and Sharon equally. bunduo Posted May 3, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 3, 2004 The day sail on the Winifred was the highlight of our cruise. Capt. Sharon and Tommy were awesome. I'm seriously considering buying a sailboat down there. Tommy had a wealth of information about transitioning from the states to St. Thomas. He was Grounds Maintenance Supervisor for a huge school district in Connecticut before moving down to the USVI. He went on vacation, decided he loved it, went home, packed his stuff and moved down. He and his wife are saving for a sailboat. He wants to sail around the world. Doesn't that sound awesome??!!?? The reason I posted was the tipping took me by suprise when we got on, too. I wanted to pay in cash but couldn't because of the gratuity...of which Tommy deserved every cent. He and Sharon do a great job. You know it was a good excursion if it makes you want to move down there. jodster Posted May 6, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Hi Lisa, Yes, I have the right e-mail address. I finally heard back from Captin Sharon. What a super lady. She wrote this lengthly e-mail describing in detail how much fun we are going to have. Also spoke with her on the phone as well. Just talking to her made up my mind to book a sail on the Winifred. I can't wait to go. Jodi Caribbean Princess 11/13/

Starz723 Posted May 11, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 11, 2004 I just put a credit card hold on my day sail on the Winifred. I too have spoken to Capt Sharon. Being an avid snorkeler and have spent 10 days on St John, Im aware of the wonderful reefs that only a pvt day sail can get you to. Im sure this will be the highlight of my cruise (among many I hope). Did you get a chance to snorekl Waterlemon cay..its magnificent. And, did you see all the beaches along St John.
