Need for local currency?

US$ are fine but just be sure they are not torn or frayed.

They only seem to accept US$ in pristine condition (!?)

A puzzlement to me, perhaps an astute person could explain this requirement.

We have seen this before.(Egypt/Africa)..local bank requirement or they won't exchange the currency. Our housekeeper in Cape Town would not accept a tip because one corner of the bill (less than 1/16 cm) had been torn off.

That being said - the vendors in the market are usually not as strict on new bills but will also pass on "old" currency (which our banks here will not exchange) as change. You need to constantly be ensuring you are paying with your "oldest" bill or you will be taking them home as collector items.
