Don't forget about port days in which you may be off the ship for 7-8 hours which means you will have to make up for lost time and fit in 5-6 drinks in short order

That's not hard to do at all. Been there, done that last month. :D

We were on the Freedom of the Seas last year (Royal Caribbean) and they made us both purchase the plan.

It changed in November 2013 - they revamped all the plans, and there's no more requirement that everyone purchase, which is awesome when you're sailing with someone that doesn't drink, or that only drinks soda. :)

That is helpful, thank you!

I was planning to buy it....most beers on thier drink menu show 4.75 each and most drinks are under the 10$ but they just raised the price to 49.95 per day pp.....that does not include gratuity....I am upset because for a 7 day it was 37$ a day until they just changed it...at 400 pp per cruise (when you add in gratuity) I am rethinking this. Days your at port you won't be drinking 50$ a day most likely....I would have to drink 10 beers a day to make it make sense...and I doubt I will...both persons in the cabin have to purchase it...and who knows by the time we cruise it may go up again!!!

Very disapointed....it was a no brainer before but 12$ more pp ... Unless your a stone cold alcoholic...won't pay!

We were planning on purchasing for our next 7 day cruise too when the price dropped. Won't be happening now - our bar bill is never $700+ - actually our entire bill is never that much even with spa treatments added in. So we won't be taking advantage of it now.

Do all cruise lines make both people in the room buy the drinks plan. I can no longer drink alcohol due to health reasons but my travelling companion can. That is not fair that she couldn't buy the plan if she wanted to.

I believe that Royal Caribbean no longer requires all persons in the same stateroom to purchase the package.

I drink top shelf vodka, hubby drinks some too and beer as well. If you only drink domestic beer you will break even at 7 beers. He thinks he will have no problem doing that since we do not spend the entire day off the ship. We are still considering it for our cruise next week. I would like to try different liquors and would not do that if I didn't have it.

DH and I purchased the cheers program on our 7 day cruise in April and I really went back and forth as to whether or not we would come out better with it. We got our money's worth on the program but I was SO SICK of drinking when we got off the cruise that I didn't drink for a long time!!! I felt like I HAD to drink at least 6-7 drinks a day so that we "broke even" and there was only one day that either of us hit our limit. We are going on another cruise in a few weeks and I don't think we are going to purchase the package this time. I just don't feel like I drink enough EVERY DAY to pay for it. Sure, there are days, like the first day and sea days that I could get my money's worth but on all the other days I just don't feel like it is worth the extra cost!! I'd rather have a massage...:D JMHO!!!

I think it's dumb to make you both buy it. Just went on Celebrity with my BFF and I didn't buy it. She did. I only drink a few drinks a day and was not even close to getting my money's worth. Very disappointing for Carnival cruise in March.

The demographics are different between Celebrity and Carnival and the profit centers are different. Remember that the alcohol package is sold to make the cruise line money, first and foremost.

We bought it for our Dream cruise in January. Saved big time. We had 93 drinks and 84 for the week.

Shots are included as long as they are not over 10.00.

Doubles are not included except in the morning with bloody Mary's while they are on special.

The wait time between drinks is 5 minutes. I like a beer back with my Bloody Mary, had to wait most times.

Get to know your wait staff, they will help you out.

At 15 they will say congrats you are cut off.

You can buy a bucket of beer on your sign and sail, they count 1 against you, what you do with the rest is up to you.

We are getting it for our 11 day in January.

They definitely cut you off after 15. Last year on the Liberty a man in the casino was throwing a fit because they would not serve him another drink. He was offered the Bartender $20 and was still refused. He was also stumbling around and slurring words like a champ so that may have played a part, but the bartender's explanation was based on the 15 drink rule.

I am going on my first cruise with my husband in October. We are going with a bunch of friends including my best friend and her future husband who are actually getting married on the ship before we set sail.

I am trying to decide if we should purchase the "Cheers Program" or just buy as we go. For the both of us on an 8 day cruise the cost will be $790.00. I understand that the liquor bill really adds up, but I have no idea what drinks cost on a cruise. For instance what do they charge for a Bloody Mary or a Martini? For those of you who have cruised on Carnival, what brand of Vodka do they offer? Do they have Kettle One or Grey Goose? My husband is a beer drinker and I see that you can pre-order 4 pks of beer to be delivered to your stateroom. Doing it that way the beers cost $5.50/beer. Is this what most beers cost at the bars? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I actually went on the carnival.com and printed menus for the drinks and costs....esentually if your going to drink 6 a day you will be spending the 50$ anyway...but beer is cheaper....in addition to the 49.95 a day they tack on the gratuity....so ours comes to like 54 a day. The days your at port Will you really drink that much....and the days your hungover from trying .... will you drink that much....I also am struggling with this....and yes...they have top shelf vodka

Beer is 5-7 and liquor about 10 per drink if you drink the special of the day it is a little cheaper also buckets of Beer are also a little cheaper and if you buy them during comedy night shows you usually get a 5$ casino bonus. As the other guy said days your off the ship you won't be paying as much to carnival. If you are a big gambler you will probably earn free drinks in the casino. We are not big drinkers but I usually spend about $50 a day for the two of us. I would not get my money's worth from the cheers program and would probably miss my excursions if I tried. I also buy ahead drinks you go to the web site where you are planning your cruise and can purchase gifts to be sent to your room. They usually bring the cards to dinner or leave them in your cabin but the money is already loaded to your sail and sign account. I like to have most of my expenses pre paid. Check out my travel blog http://www.atouristlife.com thanks have #FUN

Question 1: I've been doing research and I cannot tell if the Cheers! program includes Bottled Beer??? --My husband wants Bud Light! Does the Cheers! Program include bottled domestic beer? [[i understand that it does not include buckets of beer]]

Question 2: If you have selected as part of your cruise to pre-pay gratuities then we don't need to tip the bartender, correct? Plus, we are not going to be charged anything additional on our card (another gratuity charge) because we bought the Cheers! program, correct?

1. Yes, though you can't have glass by the pool so it's poured into a plastic cup (unless it a can or aluminum "bottle").

2. The $12 or so gratuity per day is not for the bar staff. You will pay an additional gratuity on the full package price and on drinks you pay for individually (outside of the package).

In the port of Galveston, we were charged sales tax on the drinks covered by the package, 12 cents for a soda. You can't buy the Cheers pkg. the first day, only soda pkg. It was funny, our grandson, 8 years old, learned the first day to write in the 12 cent tax on the TOTAL line then sign his name on the bottom. The second day we noticed he was still writing in the 12 cents on the receipt before signing it. We gently corrected him and had a chuckle because we all do things by rote, sometimes without understanding why.
