Texas Posted April 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2013 We have signed up for this tour with the ship's excursion. Wondering if we can do this on our own with a taxi cheaper. Anyone know how much a taxi would cost and how much the tram ride cost? We will be arriving on the Emerald Princess, not sure where we dock. Thanks for any help. blue_water Posted April 3, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2013 You dock at havensight (WICO) so you can walk to the PP tram from the ship. The tram is around $20pp, you can buy the tram tickets at your excursions desk. You could taxi to Mountaintop first then taxi back to Havensight and then take the tram up to PP (I would hit PP last). I would guess roundtrip taxi to MT is around $15pp but that's a guess. Mountaintop was rebuilt after burning down and isn't as "charming" as the original in our opinion. There's a fairly large souvernir store and they sell a banana daiquiri, but the main draw is the magnificient view of Magens Bay. But it isn't on our list anymore since the change. Paradise Point is a great spot to relax after touring the island or enjoying a beach, excellent views of the harbor and our favorite spot to enjoy a drink and a bite while enjoying the view. There's usually a band as well.
O2B@Cagain Posted April 4, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Princess usually docks at Crown Bay. You will be closer to Mountain Top. One question: These are both "view"destinations. Would you like to do something else besides look at views? You might consider a taxi ride to Mountain Top and a beach for some variety. ;)

There is shopping available right at the dock as well. I would agree with touring the island or hitting a beach before going to PP. We would rent a car and spend a little time at a beach (Coki or Sapphire) then hit Iggie's for lunch and finally PP for the view and a drink. Steep hill to PP for first-timers but definitely , and STT is very easy to drive. But the tram is very convenient to the Havensight dock.
Texas Posted April 4, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Thanks for the replies. We will be snorkeling and beaching at most ports, looking for something different. The tram/lunch/shopping sounds like fun. I think we will cancel the ship's excursion and just do it on our own. We will need the exercise!
Livethelife Posted April 4, 2013 #6 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Texas - You may wish to build some flexibility into your plans as Emerald Princess is one of the ships that does NOT exclusively dock at one pier or the other. Sometimes it is docked in Havensight (WICO) and sometimes in Crown Bay. Don't know how far out your cruise is but in April this ship is scheduled once for Havensight and once for Crown Bay. Have a great cruise! :)
blue_water Posted April 4, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Yes the port is not guaranteed for the ship and during April she docks at Havensight twice (both weekdays), April 3 & 23, and once at Crown on a Saturday, April 13. If you are on the April 13 cruise you can taxi to Havensight for shopping, have lunch at the Fat Turtle, then take the tram up to PP for drinks and the view. All within walking distance once you taxi there. http://www.fat-turtle.com/ http://www.google.com/search?q=paradise+point,+st+thomas&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=fqRdUaaiDKrq0AHr2oD4Cg&ved=0CDcQsAQ&biw=770&bih=222 stthomassource.com/redirect.php?id=1147234187
Texas Posted April 4, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Wow, such great info. Thank you both. Our ship docks on Saturday, April 13. The Fat Turtle sounds like a fun place for lunch. Thanks for the tip. How far is WICO from Crown Bay? Can we find a taxi for 5?
blue_water Posted April 4, 2013 #9 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Yes you will find a safari taxi no problem. And thanks O2B@Cagain and Livethelife for the fact that the ship does dock at both ports!
Texas Posted April 10, 2013 Author #10 Share Posted April 10, 2013 How far apart are the two ports? Thanks
blue_water Posted April 10, 2013 #11 Share Posted April 10, 2013 Don't know the exact mileage but they're on either side of town. This map shows Crown Bay and Yacht Haven Grande which is Havensight or WICO, just enlarge it. http://www.virginislandsthisweek.com/us_virgin_islands_maps/st_thomas_island_road_map.html

blue_water Posted April 17, 2013 #13 Share Posted April 17, 2013 Thanks for ther reoprt Texas! Many people never get up there because others tell them it's not worth the cost and I'm glad you made it. Great spot to relax and watch ships and seaplanes from as the sun goes down...
