Fantasy Dinner attire

My family and I leave in 31 days for our first ever cruise. I'm beginning to make my list (and check it twice) of what to pack. What should I pack for dinner? Do we need to dress up for dinner every night or just one? Please help this newbie! Thanks!

I saw lots of people dressed up for elegant night. Many passengers take advantage of the opportunity to have many photos taken without feeling obligated to purchase any. On cruise casual nights there were those who dressed up wearing nice dresses and suits, some wore sundresses and slacks and polo or dress shirt with tie - no jacket, and then there were those wearing t-shirts and shorts.

Suits on cruise casual nights? Hardly see anybody dressed up even on elegant nights, especially on shorter cruises.

Yes, suits on cruise casual nights, too. I'm not saying that was the majority, just that some were dressed up on non-elegant nights. I felt underdressed wearing capris, heeled sandals, and a nice top.

I found on our cruise that people dressed up more than I expected from reading cruise critic. Not everyone! But many people on elegant night were dressed up in shirts, ties and the women in nice cocktail style dresses. Hair up, etc. I'm sure there were suits (my SO wore one). On casual evenings I still always tried to wear something with a little sparkle. It has nice darker lighting in the restaurant (we had ATD) and a nice ambience. I never noticed anyone tacky, but then I probably wasn't "looking" that much either :-) More out in the promenade watching folks taking pictures.

just off the Fantasy. We saw everything from tuxedos to shorts and flip flops. I normally take a tux on longer cruises, but on our five night Fantasy cruise, I left it at home. I wore a dark blue suit and felt a bit overdressed My wife took a basic Talbots tan dress.

Count me as one of the snobs people talk about on CC. I don't expect people to dress "formal" anymore, but I do wish everyone would dress up more than they do.

This is what our family wears and we seem to fit in with the majority:

Elegant Night: DH-Button Up Collared Dress Shirt/Dress Pants/Tie, DS(18)-Button Up Collared Dress Shirt/Dress Pants, DD(16)-Homecoming Syle Dress, Me-Cocktail Style Dress

Casual Night: DH-Collared Polo or Tropical Shirt/Khakis or Long Shorts, DS(18)-Collared Polo/Cargo Shorts, DD(16) - Cami or Nice Top/Short Skirt, Me - Nice Top/Capris or Sundress

I was on the same cruise and I saw a tux on a cruise casual night. :)

I just noticed you said "no tie" right after I underscored the above. My SO said if you're going to make me wear dress pants, dress shirt, dress shoes, & a tie, I may as well wear my suit coat. I was surprised he said that. That's the only time he wears his suit except for weddings & funerals.
