Hi we are doing a coastal cruise from LA to Vancouver in May. We will be spending the day in Vancouver before taking amtrak home. Does anyone know of any Casino's close by the Port in Vancouver and Amtrak station? thanks Looking for something fun to do for the day

There's the Edgewater Casino near BC Place but there is lots more to do than just the casino.

Vancouver is my all-time favorite cruise port, which we visit at least once a year. We have never run out of things to do or see. Just a stroll along the northern part of the Seawall (from Canada Place to Stanley Park) (http://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/seawall.aspx) will have your jaw dropping. The architecture in Vancouver is amazing. One of my favorite things to do is cruising False Creek on the mini-ferries, stopping by Granville Island for lunch (http://www.granvilleislandferries.bc.ca/sightseeing.htm).

 

Get up bright and early the day your ship pulls in, and be on the starboard side as it nears Stanley Park. OMG, I can hardly wait to be back there!

About how long of a walk would you say it is to Stanley Park from the Pier at Canada Place?

Walking to the park is easy - see this Google Map that takes you along the very scenic waterfront for 1.7 miles (you can walk along a more direct route and save about a third of a mile, but it's much less attractive). Getting there isn't the tiring part though... The park itself is huge, over 1,000 acres, with extensive walking & biking trails. Just walking around the outside along the seawall is over five miles.

 

If it's a nice day, renting a bike is a good balance of efficiency and ease to go wherever you want to in the park - looping the whole thing back to where you started is an hour even at a very lazy pace, there are bike racks all over the park, and every rental includes both a helmet (legally required) and a lock (just plain sensible).

 

The park shuttle is the best motorized way to see as much of the park as possible - it makes 15 HOHO stops inside the park for $10 a person - and the number 19 local bus is a quick & cheap way to get you to the park if walking isn't your thing or the weather sucks. If there's a group of you without transit passes a cab might be just as cheap though - $10 should get you from the pier to the park entrance where you can rent bikes, get on the shuttle etc.

Martin - you can rent a bike at Trevor Linden's Club 16 facility at the Convention Center - no need to go to the park entrance to rent one.

Quite right Dennis - definitely the most convenient location to the pier. But they do charge a couple of bucks an hour more for the same bike than the ones down by the park...

Even easier, and very reasonably priced, is to jump on the "seabus" and take the short ferry ride to the North Shore. Incredible views of Vancouver and when you get off at Lonsdale Quay there are lots of little shops and places to eat. As it is part of our local transit system, you can even transfer on that ticket to any of our buses or the Skytrain.

The seabus is virtually right there at the port, as is the skytrain.

While a 50 year resident of the North Shore and a frequent visitor today I have to reluctantly admit that Lonsdale Quay while an interesting visit....it really is pale in comparison to the festival market of Granville Island.
