Wheelchair/CoCo Cay tender

Recommended Posts

Hello!

We have an adult daughter in a wheelchair. Although this is our fourth cruise, it will be our first time using the tender (CoCo Cay). Will it be easy access with the wheelchair?

Thank you!

Denise :)

It depends on the seas that day. It is up to the staff about transferring a wheelchair onto tenders. Assuming you make it to Cococay, there are beach wheelchairs available once there.

Yes it should be, the tender operators will help her on and off, they also have the large balloon wheel wheelchairs on Coco Cay, very easy over the sand

Though RCCL is great in assisting those with disabilities ( which is the reason prefer to cruise with RCCL) there are times that wheelchairs and mobility scooters are not allowed on the tenders. I use a mobility scooter and very rarely am I allowed to tender. Though others have stated it shouldn't be an issue , tendering with a wheelchair depends on several factors.

  • First being if it's a power wheelchair or a standard collapsible chair. Power Chairs and Mobility Scooters are generally not allowed to go on the tenders unless the tender has roll-on capabilities. Standard collapsible wheelchairs are generally allowed.
  • Even if your daughter has a standard collapsible wheelchair , the cruise line requires that the individual has to be able to walk down/up some steps to be able to board the tender. The crew will provide general assistance but will not carry or lift the person down/up the steps onto the tender as doing so poses a safety risk
  • Tendering with a any type of wheelchair and mobility scooter is always at the discretion of the Captain as the passengers safety is all the priority.

The following is RCCL's policy regarding tendering which was copied directly from RCCL's website . Here's the link for reference. http://www.royalcaribbean.com/contentWithHero.do?pagename=getting_on_and_off_the_ship

Traveling from Ship to Shore

At some ports, the ship will anchor off shore, and guests are taken to shore by small boats called tenders. Even if the ship is scheduled to dock at a pier, it can change to tendering.

Guests with assistive devices who are unable to take a few steps will be unable to board tenders unless roll-on capability is available.

In order to safely board most tenders, guests must be able to take steps and use a collapsible manual wheelchair. In addition, motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters can not be taken on tenders, unless roll-on capability is available. Inquire about tender roll-on capability at Guest Relations Desk while on board. Please note roll-on capability is not guaranteed.

Weather, sea conditions and other factors may preclude tendering. Safety of our guests and crew is our primary consideration, and the Captain and his staff will make the final decision regarding transferring guests and their assistive devices based on safety reasons.

If guests are unable to tender or disembark because of due to these circumstances, there will be no refund or credit for missed ports. While we recognize your disappointment, the safety of our guests and crew takes precedence.
