Messina to Taormina on a Sunday??

We're going to be docking in Messina on a Sunday in June. The total time in port is 8 AM until 4 PM and the ship is not offering a tour to Taormina as an option...perhaps they know something I don't know!!! Does anyone have an suggestions about what might be the easiest and least expensive way to visit Taormina from Messina on a Sunday? The Italian train site is doing my head in trying to get a schedule and a fare quote! It's looking like car hire on a Sunday is a non-starter! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I contacted three private tour operators are all at least $55 per person or more which seems a bit steep to me. Any recommendations that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Sicily life is a good company. Or you could just take a cab. We had to take a cab from Taormina back to Messina one time and it ran about 90 euros for three people so
