Kiel Canal open?

Recommended Posts

I understand that repairs are being done on the locks at Brunsbuettel at the western end of the Kiel Canal. In March, I know the canal was completely closed to larger ships for two weeks. Now I read that the north or south larger locks will be closed for repairs.

What does that mean to ship traffic? Can ships transit the canal in both directions even though one of the locks is closed?

The excursion to Hamburg out of Kiel (while the ship transits the canal) has been cancelled for our cruise and it has me nervous as to why.

Thanks for any insight.
