JacDro Posted April 27, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Was on a high protein/low carb diet and my kidneys didn't like it. Too much protein -- have to stop and figure out another type of diet. Anyone else have this problem? Know I can count on you guys for help and support Jacki Sovereign July 2000 Sovereign August 2000 Imagination July 2001 Sovereign August 2001 Paradies June 2002 Pride August 2002 Sensation March 2003 Enchantment May 2003 Sovereign October 2003 Sensation January 2004 Mariner May 2004
WeirdEyes Posted April 27, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Jacki, if you don't drink a lot of water, a high protein diet will affect your kidneys. When I was on Atkins, my kidneys were affected as I didn't drink enough water. Now that I'm on South Beach, I drink lots and lots of water and my kidneys haven't bothered me one bit. I also get kidney infections rather easily, but haven't had one in a long time. Maybe you should try Weight Watchers? I lost 40 lbs doing WW, but the problem was, I couldn't eat like that forever cause I was always hungry. Good luck!!! <MARQUEE> Shelia </MARQUEE> Sailing the Mariner in....... JacDro Posted April 27, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Thanks, Sheila. Knew I would info from one of my May 30 cruise pals. Is weight watchers more calorie watching than carbs, etc.? Just want to find something that works for me. Have 60 more lbs. to go, would be happy with a lb. a week. Took me time to gain so I can't be in any hurry to lose it. Trying to eat more turkey and chicken than beef. Kicking myself for letting myself get this heavy. Have a great day. WeirdEyes Posted April 27, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Jacki, yes Weight Watchers is more about counting calories than carbs. Although it has been a couple of years since I did WW (well it was my version anyway). Maybe someone else that actually is doing WW now can chime in here and give you some advice. I would be happy losing one pound a week also. I've only lost 2 lbs this whole month! It is a slow go for me right now. My clothes are looser now so I guess I can't complain too much. Good luck! <MARQUEE> Shelia </MARQUEE> Sailing the Mariner in....... kimned88 Posted April 27, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 27, 2004 good luck jackie with trying a different WOE. yes atkins can cause problems with people's kidneys if there is already a problem...it is like salt with a person with high blood pressure...it doesn't cause it, but it can make it worse, sometimes in people that don't already know there is a problem. sorry to hear about yours. let us know what happens. 35 down, 186 to go gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now.....hurry december!!! kim scandanavian cruise line 1987 cape canaviral - 1995 carnival jubilee - sept 2002 CARIVAL VALOR - DEC 26, 2004 (2ND VOYAGE FOR HER) days to go!!!!!! <a href="http://www.escati.com/counter98/free_time_codes.htm"> </center>
jackiedan Posted April 28, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 28, 2004 Hi there I was doing the low carb diet and had the same problem with kidneys. I switched to more lean protein (turkey, chicken etc...) raw veggies and fruits. I carry almonds with me to munch on trough out the day and also started chuggin the water. I carry a 32 oz. water bottle with me everywhere, when its empty I fill it right away. In a normal day I drink about 3 of those, dont even have to think about it anymore. It took a few days to get used to drinking that much water, and having to pee 100 times a day, but it has helped a lot. Good Luck and I hope you can find a new diet approach that will help you. JacDro Posted April 28, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted April 28, 2004 Thanks so much for the help. I have switched to more chicken and turkey, more salads and fruit. May lose it slower but that is probably best. Kidneys just couldn't handle all the protein At 53 body isn't what it used to be. Gravity takes over there too. Have a great day everyone. All the support and help is soooo appreciated.
